OK I finally have all of the extras off of head. To recap very briefly, I wrote earlier asking for help in getting the intake manifold and distributor off. All the advice helped a lot I was able to take those parts off today. (I am only able to work on this thing on weekends.) I R a total noob as far as wrenching goes. I have two manuals for my 1998 Geo Metro with a 1.0 L engine and per the manuals, I have taken off the distributor, the valve cover, timing belt cover n belt. I have unscrewed as many of the nuts n bolts off of the intake and exhaust manifolds as I can reach. I was able to disconnect the exhaust manifold flange from the exhaust pipe so that manifold should be loose. I have taken off the head bolts (8). Now according to my manual I should be able to pull the head off. Do I need to hammer on the head to break a seal or do I need to use a pry bar to separate the head from the engine block? I realize that to most of you that have been wrenching the answer is probably painfully simple but please keep in mind that I have no idea what I am doing. I did go through Johnny Mullets excellent head repair guide. When he gets to the same point I am at He states “Get a buddy to lift up head & intake assy and remove vacuum lines, grounds, fuel lines, etc)” OK I do not have a buddy helping me but I can’t budge the head to save my life. Is Johnny skipping a step the ordinary mechanic would just know to do or am I am just such a wimp I can’t even lift a simple head? Thanks again for any and all help.

The head is just stuck on. You can pry a little here and there to force it off, just don't gouge the aluminum.

Look for an edge you can gently pry under. Then use a big flat tipped screw driver to apply pressure to move the head. It won't slide. There are dowel pins making sure it won't slide. Also make sure once you get the head off, to remove the little brass oil reducer in the block. Its small and will have a slot in it. Do not lose that!
