well yesterday i worked on the car from the time i got up till it was time to goto bed, the altanator was a pain in the butt to get back on but i finally got it. so the engine did start up but sounds like i have a little knock which is scary because it did'nt sound like that before i started :hmm. so do you all think that it coulod be just a little bit out of time and causing it to knock? i think i read on this site something about that but not sure, anyone ever experiance a little knock after reinstalling top end? all i did was replace exhaust and intake valves on #3 and new water pump and gaskets.

thanks

Did you clean the lifters or do anything with them? They need to "pump up" with oil before they start working right.

Johnny,

i did'nt do anthing with the lifters :banghead and that is what it sounds like (no oil in top end). is there anything i can do to fix it without tearing it all apart again? last night i started it again and moved the distributer back toward the firewall and it ran better but still knocking :( . a few qeustions for ya #1 will the engine run with the distbibuter 180 out (when i reinstalled the cam there are 2 marks on the gear and it was a 50/50 chance @ picking the right mark, i forgot to mark which one it was on when i took it apart. #2 could i have installed the head gasket wrong causing it not to get oil up top. i hope you or someone on hear has a solution for me.

thanks again

Just for a quick check, run your timing marks up on what you think is tdc on number one cylinder and pull the distributor cap off and see if the rotor is pointing to the number one cylinder spark plug wire, usually there is a number one stamped on the distributor cap. That should tell you for sure if you have all the puzzle put together right.

and if its wrong and it is out of time would that make it knock like it is? or is it the lifters?

thanks

You make sure you have the timing right and the lifters should take care of themselves if that is what the problem is. Did you put a timing light on it after you got it running?

When I had my head redone, upon re-installation I had some knocking & like JM said, those lifters just need some time to fill up with oil. There could be a problem with your installation, but my guess is that if you ran it for 5-10 min. or so straight, the noise will go away. I asked the guy who rebuilt mine & he said just that & sure enough he was right. I also had it out of timing at 1st too, but I couldn't even get it started. Does your sprocket have any numbers/letters next to each mark?

if it is out of time can i fix it by pulling the distributer and put it in the right way? or do i have to do it with the belt?

thanks

There's 2 diff. timing you have to worry about...distributor (really easy) & camshaft (pretty easy) & there are tutorials on this site, just search for them. If it's running, my guess is that you're just off by 1 tooth, so just slide your timing belt off move the sprocket 1 tooth forward or backward & see what happens.

The only thing having to do with timing that will cause a knock would be a loose timing belt sprocket. Having the valve timing off will cause it to run poorly or not at all, and having the ignition timing off (drastically) will cause ping, or in extreme cases "knock", but not at idle. The distributor only goes in one way.

ok, everything was in time and started it back up and ran for 3 min and the timing belt broke (no big deal) got a new one and started it up again and i see oil leaking from bottom of head on passenger side. could i have installed the head gasket wrong (cover up oil valve that feeds oil to top end) or would it not run with it installed wrong. should anything be done to that oil valve while the head is off. has anyone had the same problem i am going thru?

thanks
