I've been posting here before, but I just acquired a pearl white 1993 Geo Metro convertible. Paid $1500 for it. It has an automatic transmission, brand new top, no rust at all, and even has the original factory geo AM/FM/CD/cassette player (I thought they only put factory CD players in geos during the later years). I kind of wanted a manual transmission, but as hard as it is to find a convertible these days I'll take what I can get. I will post a picture soon.

My question to those who own metros with automatic transmissions: Are they really that bad, and what's the best mileage you can get with them, if you drive it gently? Do they tend to need repairs after a while?

Autos are not that bad.The get 40+ when driven right and that is better than most cars on the road with an auto.

all the metros I've had with autos never let me down...easier on the legs in traffic...avg. 40 mpg.

I have a 93 auto and am getting 30 mpg, but I just rebuilt the head so compression is slowly rising. Drives really good.

I am a dude. Therefore I need a stick to handle. I don't want something doing what I usually do with my stick automatically for me. *enough innuendo?

I hear you bro. Same way I've always felt. This is the first auto that I have ever owned, so we'll see how it goes. I'm picking the car up today.

My brother lives in FL, so I've had him looking for Geo's in the Orlando area (find one with no rust and I'd gladly drive it back to KS). I tried talking him into trying one out, but he has a Mini Cooper, and didn't enjoy the 3cyl engine.

Congrats on your find.

I think you made a few mistakes, cause if your handling your own stick, your not doing it right :evillol

Will love seeing pics when they arrive :popcorn

It's pouring rain outside right now, so I'll have pics probably tomorrow.

Hate to say it, but driving it home with the blaring pink decals on its sides, people probably thought I was the gayest guy in Jacksonville... :smackface
It seriously looks just like a toy barbie car from the early 90's. :rasp Except it's white with pink stripes, instead of pink with white stripes. The auto trans took some getting used to, but I got a feel for the power range in no time at all.

The pink decals are coming off immediately. I am really glad to find that it has almost no rust whatsoever except for the tailgate panel above the tail lights, the guy who owned it before was in the military for many years and kept it in great shape.

I had a scare when I got it home and parked it in the garage, because when I tried putting it in reverse, it wouldn't do anything! No response. I shut off the car, got out and prayed, and tried it again. Luckily it worked that time. Anyone experienced this kind of thing, where reverse doesn't respond on certain occasions?

first i'd suspect the linkage or big switch on the transmission. if the shifter cable is out of adjustment you get funny responses from the switch.

second i'd suspect the reverse/ second shifter solenoid. it's one of 2 on the tranny pump body on the driver's side of the car (left side.) there's a big white round connector on the left rear side of the transmission with 2 conductors. that's the signal wiring for the solenoids. i check them by taking a hot wire from the battery and touching it to the transmission side connector blades one at a time. if you hear the muted click from the bottom pan, you know that they're working.
