Hey guys,

Just a quick question.

It seems that when coming to a stop if i drop down into Natural that i can stop much faster then if I stay in whatever gear I am in.

Is this normal and does this in anyway hurt the tranny or brake system?

All the best

That doesn't seem normal. Are you saying that the brakes themselves seem more effective when not in gear? I really don't know what to make of that if that's the case.

Keeping it in gear should give some "engine braking" and help slow you down.

Yeah Rooy,

That is what I am saying. It does seem that the brakes are more effecting when not in Gear.

I thought that this seemed odd.

I dont really know if it is a bad thing though as the brakes work well in gear as well but is seems that if need I could drop into N and stop on a dime.....

hmm...maybe you break hard and when you do the engine is fighting to stay alive? But when your in natural or neutral the engine can just run so no bogging down. Maybe bogging can affect the brake booster (do geos even have brake boosters?)

Grr

yes this makes sense. the engine is trying to make you go FORWARD this will counter some of your attempt to slow down. SO in neutral there is no forward force but inertia so the brakes will seem to work better.

but this is odd since the effect is so small you should not be able to feel or sense the difference.

In gear above idle the engine will slow you down, not speed you up. This is called engine braking.
