Bearing Noise

I thought it was my timing belt being too tight...but it wasn't. It's either my alternator or water pump. Both spin freely by hand. The pump spins as freely as the extra I have. The alternator spins fine. But i'm getting noise when the alternator is tightened...a "whirring' noise. When I remove the accessory belt, the noise goes away.

Help...I don't need a fried alternator on the way to GeoPalooza.

Hmmm... if the pump spins freely and the weep hole isn't... um, weeping... I'd look at the alternator. Try removing it and taking it to a parts house for a test. See if it makes that noise when they bench test it.

There should be almost no noise. Did you try the magic screw driver listening trick? Careful not to stick it into a moving part. I wish I was gonna be there guys.

It's cheap enough to replace the bearings in these alternators.....

It is, cept for I can't get the pulley off, I don't know where to get one for a reasonable price, and I don't know what bearing I need.

There's a thread on here somewhere that had the bearing info on it. I read it fairly recently. Borrow a pulley/gear puller from autozone.

Do you have a local bearing shop. Its just gonna be a common bearing. What are they asking for a alt? I will look to see if I have a spare tonight. I know I have the one that came of my 99,G10. If so I can get it sent to you over night.
Will the one from the 99 fit????
