Finding a good job can be a real bitch. My son joined the Army when he was 19 to make a living. Got out and came back and worked with me at the shipyard for a few years. Shit happened and he moved to south Florida to work a big construction project. Came back and still could not find a good job. Left in December with a wife and 9 month old baby in a 93 Toyota Corolla to work a shut down in Iowa. Then he went to outside of Chicago for another shut down. They liked him and he has been there almost 3 years. Moral of the story? Many times you have to do things you do not want to do to get ahead. You make your own luck. Does he like working in sub zero cold? Hell no but he does what he has to do. We both wish he was here but that is not going to happen any time soon. :cold :cold :cold

Go to the local post office and ask if they are in need of RCA's.( rural carrier associates). They pay about 20 bucks an hour. No benefits but you do get mileage if you use your own car. Have to be at least 18, good driving record(no accidents or tickets), and not a felon. Go and ask the postmaster for all the details. It is THE best job in the entire post office. Take it from me, I've been a postmaster, supervisor, clerk, and city letter carrier. Nothing beats a rural carrier. If you work 6 hours you get paid for 8. It's a great way to make a living.

You are trying to find a job in one of the worst economies this country has seen since the Great Depression. Unemployment is in the double digits, the worst it has been in decades. If you walk into a job interview, any job interview, and essentially say "hey, I'm a nice guy and a hard worker but that's about it" you're basically screwed. Folks with masters degrees are settling for jobs at wal-mart just to keep food on the table. They say the recession is over, I say bull- :shit

A job interview is almost exactly like a first date in that you have to lay down the precise amount of bullshit to accomplish your goal. You have to be well groomed, good breath, firm handshake, and always look them in the eye, but do not stare.

I know you won't agree with me ( I wouldn't have when I was 18) but we all tend to be full of ourselves when we are 18, and for that reason NO ONE wants to hire an 18 year old. I have turned down a few applications myself based purely on the fact that they were 18 and I didn't want to deal with someone with an immature mentality.

Bottom line, bro, you have got to bring something to the table that no one else can, or no one will hire you in this economy. So from this point it looks like you are in an 'I'll take what I can get' mode. So why not try to find a job somewhere that will do you some good later on down the road? Try to focus on jobs that you find interesting and fulfilling. In the meantime you can always cut grass or wash cars to get some of that valuable work experience. I'll tell you the truth, I detailed cars when I was 18 and made a killing! Of course, I was 50 pounds lighter and 18 years younger then, but seriously, folks will pay high dollars to have their cars cleaned and shined...if you do a good job. If the word gets out that you do good work and are reasonably priced, shoot, you will have to hire someone to help you! Shoot, offer to do oil changes and tire rotations and such. There's all kinds of stuff you can do if you are motivated and have a little determination that don't require you to work for 'the man'.

good luck man, it's a jungle out there.

Metroschultz, what, may I ask, is the VMF?

VMF = Vehicle Maintenance Facility. We at the post office like to use shortcuts whenever we talk. It is a facility which has a few mechanics that tend to the surrounding areas vehicles. There is one in Little Rock which supports the entire state. If a vehicle has been wrecked, say in Rogers Ar., then it will be shipped down to Little Rock for repairs, instead of having a local dealer fix it. While in the VMF it will be gutted and rebuilt, i.e. frame, body, engine, tranny, etc. and the post office has a like new vehicle.

Bottom line, bro, you have got to bring something to the table that no one else can, or no one will hire you in this economy. Well stated. Bennie Good posting with good facts.. Sometime we tend to over look the some what simple ways to get money. For many of us it is being the head nuclear scientist or nothing. LOL I learned a great deal when the Vietnamese refuges came into this area. One guy who had been a engineer sold egg rolls at the fish house. Made damn good money till he got on his feet. The ladys set up sewing shops. People were having a hard time finding work and here came these people who could barely speak English and were making money. They did it by doing things that we had either over looked or chose not to do. The car detailing suggestion is a great idea. I also did that to supplement my income. I also wish CB the best. :banana :banana :banana

Metroschultz, what, may I ask, is the VMF?
I am going to take a stab at it and say it means (Vehicle maintaince facility). Other words garage, shop, repair center.

After I typed that I see the next post down the man has addressed this.

Rock on HB508. If you ever want to get anywhere in this country just remember to humble your self and do things nobody else wants. If you want to become a detailer, become one and have the dedication to do what no one else wants to do......i.e. rotate tires, clean the wheel wells, clean the underside of the car....and be the best at doing it. Then do the same thing tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after, and the day after.......

Why have the Vietnamese succeeded in this country after only one generation while the African American culture has had 300+ years of being here and have little to show? It's because the Veitnamese wanted to work hard because they new if they stayed in the old country they had no future, but they view America as the land of opportunity. Where as the African American culture has fallen into the belief that the Government will GIVE them the success they deserve because of the things in the past.

Two different points of success. One is going out and achieving success by starting out at the lower end of the spectrum while the other is achieving success by having it given to them.

Coche, you are young. You have a lot of older friends on this site who are giving you sage advise. Listen to what they have to say. It is great to have an older person give you advise. Learn from that advise and use it to your advantage. Remember, you will not experience anything that these guys have not experienced themselves. They are talking from experience. Listen, learn, and then act accordingly. Start out doing something you love doing, and gradually build up to become the best at that one thing. If you love building house, start by being an apprentice. I you love being a mechanic, start by tearing up a car and rebuilding it. If you love playing in the stock market, read some books on trading and make a few trades. What ever you do, do it because you love doing it. Get an education in that particular field, whether by appreniticing or schooling, but do it while you are young. And continue building up your education until you become the best at the field you choose to participate in. Good luck. We will be pulling for you.

Thanks, Doc and others. I've got it now. It seems that the big up side to this particular job is the part about suppling your own vehicle. The mileage is great, however, if the car is down for repairs, so is your pay check ( and job). How would anyone do this job without suppling a car that they own?

Some post offices have vehicles called LLV's which the rural carrier uses. If you supply you own car and it breaks down, you have a couple of options, 1. have a back up vehicle, 2. rent a car

Side note on jobs. When I was out of work I tried to remember there are 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week. This will increase your chances for a job if you remember this. Many jobs are weekend, nights, afternoon, some is in the store working when you go in at 1 am looking for a loaf of bread. Being able to work any time, any day of the week can really enhance your chances of finding a job. :banana :banana :banana

I am not sure if this was touched on or not but it surfaced in my memory so I will shoot it out. Concerning electrical companies, plumbing, and airconditioning and heating. Some of these companies will take a unexperienced person and start them off and teach them the trade of electrican or heating and air repair or plumber in apprenticeship. All of these pay pretty well and are in demand. Just look up some of these companies and knock on the door and tell them I really want to work and ask them if they have a apprenticeship program.

This might be a good place to start looking,
