Hey there everyone.

So I searched under rims and read a lot about 13s 15s even 17s and 155s and 145s and 195s and I think I got it. But I'm still in the dark about a few things so here's my dilemma:

I am willing to spend $600 on some nice new rims and tires, I'm looking for something exactly like these:

I THINK they are BBS, anyway those look like 14s hopefully. So my question is this: I want to retain my current mileage and correct speedo readings and correct odo readings. Can I purchase, without having it custom made, the rim and tire pictured (or something very close) that can replace the stock 12" 155/80s and keep my mpg, speedo, and odo unmolested?

Why not bump up the tires OD a little?

set a limit of X i would say two hundred dollars max for tires and the same for the rims
compare rims that fit in the wheels and rims that interchange thread in this forum

shop on CRAIGLOOK until you find what you want

then
buy an MPGuino and set the speedo in the MPGuino using the software look in ecomodder.

total cost will be under $500.

smooth surface wheels are better for FE and aerodynamics than BBS

just a thought

Increase Outside Diameter? Will a small increase not affect the speedo/odo/mpg? If so how small?

Thanks, Mwebb, thats interesting. So you're saying use the MPGuino as the new speedometer and odometer? does it have an odometer? The odometer is really important because I keep fastidious records of every mile driven for tax purposes, thats why I want to make sure it isn't affected in the least, but if there is an aftermarket solution I'd gladly take it.

Thanks for the heads up on the efficiency dangers of BBS, It can't be too too bad can it? I'd be willing to compensate in other areas if need be. I really want that faux spoke look B-)

CB: ah, I see, well because I read that it affects the things I mentioned and I really want to avoid that if I can help it. Primarily the odometer reading and the MPG are of utmost importance to me, the speedometer I don't really care too much about as long as I knew how it affected it, i.e when speedo claims 55 its actually 63. It gets a bit more complicated with the odometer, which I am noting in a log every day, and either way you have to go out find a bloody known mile road and do a bunch of math in your head all the time. I know myself well enough to realize that multiplying my odometer reading by a percentage every time I get home is past my threshold of will. I have a hard enough time simply writing it down and figuring the trip distance

not too hard really.

my tires are 7% larger. I calculate my mileage, and then multiply it by 1.07.

okay fair enough, but what about your gas mileage? Wider/Higher tire means less mileage right?

I made this table for people who want to run different rims/tires, but would like speedo/odo stock or as close to stock as possible. Again, not all these tires exist or even fit the Metro, but in a perfect world would give you the closest OEM results. The combos in BOLD are dead on combos that will keep your speedo/odo reading correctly. So for you Geosporin, your original tires size is 145/80/12, so to run those 14" rims, there is not a "perfect" upgrade, however, if you run 165/55/14 the odo/speedo would only read .2% faster. The only way to get a "pefect" upgrade is to go with 15" rims & run 155/50/15 which prob. don't exist or 195/40/15.

taller is better, wider is worse

thanks mjspiess, yeah I wish some of those were real, man!

CB: so conversely a lower sidewall in relation to the wheel size will affect mileage?

I'm looking at 155/60/15"s will those take my mpg down from my 155/80/12"s?

Taller tires will INCREASE gas mileage on the highway, but reduce acceleration. So, if you do a lot of city driving you might loose some mileage, but in most cases you will gain. I don't know if you're going to be able to find 15" wheels narrow enough to mount 155 tires, any wheel that big is going to be 6 inches wide or so, those 155/60-15's you're talking about want a 4.5" wheel. You should go wider as long as you're changing wheels, you'll get greatly improved handling.

You can get tires that match the newer cars' diameter, then just change the speedometer drive gear, pops right in with one bolt. 185/60-14 is a perfect match for your car, that's what came on the GTi.

thanks woodie,

so... forgive me if I'm a little slow here, you're saying for my '94, I should steal a '95+ speedo drive gear, grab some 14x7 4.114 bolt pattern rims, slap 185 60 14s on em and on the whole my mpg and handling will improve?
