Mileage?

5 speed?

It looks really clean, but i'm not a big fan of $1200+ metros.

it is a five speed 1.0 but the milage is unknown because the speedo don't work. I am going to offer 850 and see what he says

If the compression is good, it's a 5speed, and doesn't have any rust issues then i think $1100 is a fair offer. I personally think asking him to take $850 right off the bat is EXTREME lowballing.

I say Compression test'r, and after you test it, turn'r on and let her run for a good while while you take a look around the car inside etc, then see if you can take it on a ride, that should a expose most problems, if they happen to be present. Hopefully they're not. Looks like a nice ride, but 850 is REALLY low, try and settle for 1k.

Make sure it idles well with the AC on. Check the speakers. If you can do the Compression test then do it. Ask if its been running syncromesh. Lastly do a good rust check.

It looks good. What about the famous lower control arm rust issues?

I figure it would take moi maybe 2 hours to get the detailing and a mechanical check like they did so that's maybe $80 of my personal time and that's worth it.

Is there a date on the battery? The brake fluid looks brown. Otherwise it would be worth the $1100 z34-5speed suggests but then I'm not a haggler.

See if seller will let you put a vacuum gage on it. While $1550 might seem high, look @ Geos on e-bay, they seem 2keep going higher in price. + if gets goes up.....

Geojames, you have been a member here long enough to know what to look for when contemplating buying a Metro. That said, let me tell you what you may not have thought of. I recently bought a 91 xfi that, although it's motor had great compression numbers, and the transmission shifted great, the over all care of the car was the usual "Bic Flick" style. That is, the car is cheap, so therefore "disposable", and who cares if you spilled a coke or twenty on the floor? Kids in the back seat sharing a Happy Meal with the upholstery? No problem, it's only a Metro, not a real car. Window hard to roll up? Crank HARDER! Door sticking on the weather strips? No problem. Snatch the door handle like a REAL MAN! Etc., etc. You get the idea.I bought the car for $800. Investment in man hours and replacement parts brought the price to near double what I initially paid. Now I have a very nice extra xfi, although it wasn't cheap! The car you're looking at seems to be a good, clean car. If the compression numbers are good, and the interior looks as good as the outside, consider what z34-5speed said, $1100

Car Nut

Paid $1750 for my 94 XFI. PO had just tuned it up, replaced cat back exhaust, new clutch kit, tbelt, wpump & air filter. Also had some new aftermarket rims on it. Said he was just trying to get his money back out of it. I've only had to change oil & replace the alt belt with a Gatorback since I bought it 1.5 yrs ago. Car was 99% rust free & I really wanted an XFI so I bought it. In the last 6 months I've bought a 95 hatchback 3/5 with a recently rebuild engine for $200. Sounds like one of the conn rods has loosened up. Owner was upset & said he wasn't putting anymore money in it. Said I could have it for $200 & I snagged it. Will have to do something with the engine & replace the windshield, so before long even this cheap car could cost quite a bit even with me doing the work. I also picked up a 99 hatch 3/5 for $600. Clean, no rust. Had factory AC, which I've decided I'd kinda like to have. Compressor is locked up, needs a clutch kit & 2 axles. Runs great & is rust free. Once again, cheap car becomes not so cheap after awhile. I have an extra engine that I'll probably build this winter, & am picking up a 5 speed trans out of a 99 4cyl [same gear ratio as XFI] 4 door with 90k on it tomorrow for $125. Shifter feels real tight & crisp, plus shifter handle isn't even worn. Picked up an XFI cam for $15 two weeks ago that I'll be putting in the 99 along with the trans when I replace the clutch. After building the motor I'll drop it in the 99 & probably sell the 94 XFI. Who knows, by then gas may be $3.50-4.00 gal & I'll double what I paid for it. lol. Anyways, like everybody has said, if you can get one for a decent, price & don't have to do much work on it, you might be better off. Good luck with whatever.

I've purchased 5 Metros in the past year (well, 5 in one year - I haven't purchased one lately) and I have still yet to get one with a really nice interior/exterior. My "dream" Metro would be one that looked nice inside and out. I can always fix the mechanical stuff. Not sure if this helps you or not, just giving you an opinion that you may not have thought about...

90 Metro paid a pretty penny for his, but it was worth it IMHO.

Offer $500. Meet somewhere around a grand or so. Pay more if you really want the car. It's shiny and pretty, looks like the engine's been detailed, but then again, when I wash mine, I clean the engine also, so it looks nearly as pretty. I see this one has no A/C. If it seems like it runs good, pay what you feel is fair.

If you really like the car, don't turn it down because of minor details like low compression, worn out axle, etc. If you buy the parts and fix it yourself, it'll only cost about the same as one or two payments on a new car at MOST to fix it up like new. So what if you have a few hundred dollars more in it than you can sell it for? If you purchased a new car, that would ALWAYS be the case!

Unless it's all rusted out, if you want it, go and get it.
