I have a running and driving 1991 2dr 3cyl 5speed car. I bought it for parts. I have a 4dr 1994 geo metro 3cyl auto (bad motor, bad trans). I am wanting to do an motor/trans swap from the 2dr to the 4dr. What I would like to know how much of the wiring harness will have to be changed to make everything work properly? I dont prefer to cross out wires like I have been told will work. Is there a correct way of doing this? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

The block, head, and transmission are identical. Just swap the 92 intake over to the 91 engine and it will hook right up with the 92 harness. I'm not sure of the 92 has a crank position sensor, but if it does you will also have to swap the oil pan, the sensor goes into the oil pan over by the timing cover.

When I swapped our 91engine, into the 93, the intake, distributor, and valve cover(from the 93) needed to be move to the 91. Then all hoses & wiring was plug & play.

I believe the crank sensor didn't show up until 1995(?)

I'm not sure what the 94 ECU will think when it doesn't see the automatic transmission. :dunno

Ah yes I forgot about the dist, it has to be moved over, electronic to vacuum so has to be switched. The auto ECU has no problem with a manual tranny, the other way around is an issue because the plug isn't there for the tranny to plug into. Several people have put an auto ECU into a manual car without issues. I've heard speculation that the auto ECU has a slightly different fuel map due to the lack of higher gears, to improve performance at the high rpm's the engine has to operate at, but they have not been confirmed.

UPDATE.... I am off on the years of the cars. They are both 1994's. I was comparing parts, and it looks to be that the Map sensors are different (just one of the few things I have checked) anyone know if the complete wiring harness will have to be swapped, or know the difference in the map sensors.

Keep everything except the block and tranny on the original car. Everything thing else will be plug & play. (Except for some "happy little adjustments" need to hook up the shifter & linkage on the manual transmission.) The car will not know that it has a different block & tranny. :whistle Unless you tell it! :lol

It's a bit more complicated than what you are hearing on here. I've done two of these swaps. The driver's side tranny mount has to be cut off and the 5spd mount has to be bolted on in the same place that it is on the donor car. I've heard that there are existing nuts welded in the frame of the auto cars that have to be located bydrilling in the center of them. I just welded mine on since I didn't know about this at the time. There is a mount on the bottom of the firewall that has to be cut off for the brace to the shifter to clear. The clutch cable holes need to be drilled out from the inside. You'll see when you look up in there that the nuts are welded on the inside . Just drill a small hole in the middle of them and clean them up from the outside. You'll need to change the pedals too. I swapped the computer and wiring from them that goes to the engine . It's pretty simple if you do this before replacing the pedal assembly. The existing harness has the wire that hooks to the clutch switch. The auto shifter has a small cable on the pass. side that goes to the ignition switch. This cable must be pulled out to turn the key all the way to the off position. I cut a section of a bic pen and slotted it so it would slide over the cable to hold it extended and taped it up and just left it under the carpet. It's a bit of work but well worth it when you mileage goes up 15mpg.

Do you have any idea as to why the Map sensor's are different? The one from the 5speed will not plug to the automatic.

Phewww! Both Motors are now out.. where to begin? This is turning out to be way more that expected, but will be rewarding in the end. This alabama heat is taking a toll on the progress.
