Garage Day; Let's get together and wrench a little.....

I made the trip to GeoPalooza this year. It was an excellent event, and I wish it was longer. In fact I spent more time driving than I did at the event, which was tiresome (and my drive was NOT the longest by far.)

Of the weekend, I most enjoyed getting to help work on Christine, JM's car. It was very informative watching Coyote X at work welding in the broken frame horn. Also, on the way home, I got to spend some time in 90Metro's garage, putting on some parts from the pic-and-pull.

About which time it occurred to me that this was what I wanted most out of my trip – working on these great little cars among my friends.

So I want to try and meet up more often; without all the driving. This isn't just for me - I think we need to be palooz-ing all over the place. I see the Mini-palooza idea is coming together in MD and soon near GA as well.

Here's the concept: let's call it a Garage Day.

A Garage Day is a local meet where we work on a project or set of projects, something which won't take more than an afternoon to complete. Of course, food could be involved. :P

A similar format could be a class on a type of repair (bodywork, engine rebuilds, etc.) Of course, someone would have to teach the class..... ;)

Anything goes for the project(s), so long as we have the tools and the collective know-how. Somebody has to host it, hopefully someone who has a decent workspace and most of the basic tools. I don't have a good place to work here at my place, but I do have a fair assortment of tools. Could even pick a spot somewhere, that gets tricky though.

Possible Topics/Projects:
Auto to manual tranny swap
Welding/frame repair
Bondo & body work
head rebuild
bottom end rebuild
DIY alignments
headlight aiming
painting
interior repair
flat floor conversion
( add your own here)
etc......

Anybody who wants to could drop by, but it will be mostly a local thing. I couldn't attend one in Ashtabula, OH – sorry :)

If anybody is interested, let's set one up!

Dude. Besides the body work or welding, this is a typical week at "Mullet's Motors". I usually end up working on cars after work and weekends most of the spring through fall months. 70% of my work is on Metro owners who travel or tow their Metros many, many miles so I can ensure it will be running in tip, top shape for many fuel saving miles.

A garage will whack you $1000 or more for a valve job. If towing your ride to a guy who knows his shit, and can do it for half that, then you make the decision.

Friday night, boydness will be picking up his 92 XFi I just rebuilt the top end on and dropping off another Metro XFi for more work. Saturday, pacopperhead and his wife will be here with his 96 and her 95 for some repairs and boydness may be dropping off a vert for some work on Saturday after he gets the first XFi home.

If you are bored Saturday, get a hotel and bring beer :cheers

Umm...ok, maybe I wasn't too clear in my post.... :-/

I am NOT suggesting that we have some sort of class at Mr. Mullet's house...or even go there at all. As I said, we ought to be meeting up locally to save driving time and expense. Here's an example.

I am in Pellyton, KY. Nearest civilization is the Lexington/Frankfort/Louisville area. The nearest 4 members to me are within 100 miles (possibly 50 miles) Kik, gritboy, Rowbear, jmarksberry. Probably others nearby. Somewhere in this area we five could meet up for an afternoon to socialize, eat some food, and tackle a project.

Among the five of us, one might know how to, say, weld really well, and could help out some others of us who would like to learn. Bringing the welder also means we don't all have to buy one in order to try it out. Maybe somebody knows about doing DIY alignments. We could have 5 perfectly aligned cars going home that day.

Everybody could do this -the Columbus guys, or the Tennesseeans, North Georgia/Alabama, Florida, Maryland, etc.

It's just an idea, and I can't say if it would work out.

I think I see what Ky's trying to say here, and it sounds like it would work out. I tend to wrench alone because I'm slow and a long thinker, but the overall idea sounds good :thumb

Right, I pretty much drove 35 hours to GeoPalooza. (it was great BTW)

KY, i'll be more than happy to participate in this. Anything <6 hours of driving would be worth my time.

Still in the brainstorming stages, CB. What project(s)? Where? Let's get some ideas flowing. :news

It would help if everyone added themselves to the Usermap on the front page. :D

Basically, we need someone with a video camera to make a DIY video to accompany all of the DIY videos.

Other things:
Brake Upgrade (gen 2 guys)
Aeromods (I can help teach this one)
Lowering (I can teach this one)
Window regulator fix
Window tinting
Sound deadening removal
A/C Install
Armrest install
Throttle Lock ( I got this one guys)
Battery Relocation
Seafoaming, before/after pics...to see if it does anything. :D

*more to come

Sup? I been watchin' you guys pull together the Florida meet..... :D

If a garage day is going to happen, I need some interested people - I know I got you, CB. :thumb

I can't hold it here, I just don't have the workspace. And I am too far for most folks down there. Where can we meet and when? Thats gotta be decided.....

Wassup with you? ;)

I don't have a garage either, or I would host it. Yeah the South meet is going well, didn't plan on so many people wanting to do it though, it worries me cause most the people that "say" they would go...also have <100 posts.

I just recently got my Metro and already have tons of projects planned and not much space to do them.

I am all for a Garage Day meeting in the Seattle/Everett area. I see that Gregg, Rhythm, and Northsacboy are about my 3 closesest members. I wonder if MetroMatt would be willing to make the drive up from the Dalles

Anyone else within driving distance interested?

We have several friends in the Portland, Or area too. And I am down the coast a bit farther. Man I almost miss spelled farther. I forgot the H. Good thing I went back and checked my spelling this time
