Will you still be able to work on cars? The electro magnetic fields from the ingition system might be bad for the defib. Brother Dan could not work on cars any more when he got his pacemaker/defib.
Hmm. A heartbeat that keeps rythm with a timing light....

Well, forget the effects of the ignition, I wonder what the arc from a welder would do?

Questions to ask the doc or electrician.

Maybe wear a jacket with a tinfoil liner to serve as a Faraday cage to protect the pacemaker/defibrulator?

I find it hard to believe that they aren't designing new heart equipment to be shielded from commonly radiating equipment. (cellphone, microwave, baby monitors, 1950s era tv remotes, etc.)

Please just call me; "Schultz"

Good Morning Boys and Girls,
I haven't been here for a while. I have had a lot on my plate and been back and forth to the doctors a shitload.

I am going under the knife on Tuesday. They are going to install my jumper cables and battery assembly. I will be out of work about a week.

"I find it hard to believe that they aren't designing new heart equipment to be shielded from commonly radiating equipment. (cellphone, microwave, baby monitors, 1950s era tv remotes, etc.)" BillHoo

No worries on the microwave stuff or auto ignition interference. Newer technology and all. Cell phones are O.K. on the opposite side of the body. or better yet, wired headset, phone on belt. No bluetooth. Bluetooth is how they monitor the unit and make programming adjustments. I will get a reader to keep here at the house, so they can get info over the phone from the unit.

Welding may be out of the question. I have to talk to the docs about that one. The online research I have done is inconclusive, some say yes, some say no, it is split about 50/50. I think it would be bad to set off the defibrillator while using high voltage equipment. I also think I can weld, cause the equipment is grounded and isolated.

Can't lie.
Am scared.
As with any surgery there are risks.

I have been beaten to within an inch of my life, You shoulda seen the other guy. I believe it has been about 60/40 in my favor.
Been shot, stabbed,
Collapsed a lung, had my ribs broken, dislocated my shoulder (2x), broken numerous other bones, lost gallons of blood (not all at once), had my jaw broken and wired shut to heal, ended with a shiny new tooth and triple root canal, retina detached ( did you know if you get hit in the eye hard enough it will pull your retina away from the inside of the orb? I didn't),
Been in auto and motorcycle accidents that tried to kill me as well,

These all pale in comparison to how I feel about the procedure I am about to undergo.
They were all in the heat of the moment and had plenty of adrenaline to alleviate the pain and support my indestructibility.
Now I have time to think about what is going to happen.
Time to reflect on my mortality.
It is a calculated risk though.
Without the unit, I will probably not survive a serious heart malfunction. Doc says I will definitely have one in the next 5 years. I have already had some minor ones. Shit. Just when I thought I was immortal.
With it I have a 30% chance of surviving. Not a perfect score, or even great odds, but better than total loss.
My wife is a wreck.
She wants the unit, but is more scared of the surgery risks than I am.
This is not open heart surgery, but still heart surgery. There is 10% chance of me not waking up. Ever. Shit happens.
I signed the waivers, I know the risk.
I have very good life insurance.
I have a living will. I will not be kept alive by machines. I don't mind machines keeping me alive while I heal, as long as the Docs are sure I am coming back.

I have the best heart surgeon in tidewater performing the procedure. Best by whose standards you ask?
Best by referral from other doctors,
best by referral from friends with heart issues,
best by statistics for successful operations.
I feel pretty safe with this guy, even if he is Asian, (because he is Asian?)(is that profiling?)
He is the only cardiologist who sat and talked with me. For an hour. Explains well. Doesn't use a lot of tech-speak.
I know my health insurance is going bat-shit over the cost of this. Don't care. That is why I have paid them for the last zillion years.

I will be back after I get home from the hospital.
I do not like being idle.
I will have to find things to keep me busy while I heal, so i will be here and every where else on the world/wide/interwebs for a few days.
Can't lift anything over 5#. !!Really!! boy that puts a hell of a limit on me.
Can't use my left arm for a week.
Can't drive for a month. ????? They have to be sure the unit won't go off on a false signal. If it goes off I will be incapacitated for 2 to 5 minutes. 5 minutes with no one holding the wheel would not end well.
I will go to my usual job, but with many restrictions. I may have to be the office whore for a while. Oh Yay, Oh Yay.
I may not be allowed to travel for some time, that is yet to be determined by the docs.

Well, enough about me.
How've you been?

Wow..... Well, you got my number. Feel free to share it incase the worse happens. I do not think I work this Saturday. Maybe Ill come down anyways and help out? Maybe I can weld some on BillWhos metro while you stand on the other side of the street and Ill shoot you cell phone photos of my progress? Guess oxygen aceleyne is always ok, just got to watch the arc stuff?

If the worse happens the VA will treat you well. My dad had a nice, cheap funeral and my mom has her way paid, plot, etc thanks to my dads service. You can come and visit me anytime, give me winning lottery numbers or tell me stuff from the other side.

My only advice is to double check the living will thing and that your family knows your wishes. My aunt had one and a grandma siezer(SP?). She was unconious from the episode and thats all she wrote. All they would give her was comfort care, no treatment to bring her back since she was out and had the order. I remember seeing her twisted up body from the spasms she had and just seeing a morphene drip. NOthing to help her breath, check her pulse, etc. She finally quit breathing and they pronounced her dead and removed her organs to donate.

22 years ago I had two heart attacks--one "almost massive". 15 years ago they found the electrical problem and mine was not bad enough for an onboard defibulator so I have been taking a pill a day since which regulates the electric source.

you got a right to be scared but they have come a long way recently.

After my heart attacks i was able to get physically healed enough to build design and build my home-

be thinking of you

You'll do fine Schultz. I understand the fear though - my heart's full of stents and I've laid on that table too many times fearing the worst. You just gotta believe. You"ll be fine.

BTW, the van's running great and now that we've done some touch up and clean up work it looks like it will be perfect for my daughter. I drove it back from VA but she drove it up here from Pittsburgh the other day (100 miles) and said she liked driving it - not intimidated by its size at all ( she drives a Toyota Echo). Again, many thanks for your thorough inspection & evaluation. You"re a good man.

We're thinking of you, rooting for you and even saying a prayer or two. Looking forward to seeing you at Geopalooza.

Read the latest, I will pray for you and your wifes emotions and fears. As far as how am I doing. Not too well myself. Diagnosed diabetes recently and going today the dr to see if I have a hernia. Wife was run over by a car and fractured leg. Daughter totaled out her vehicle and now needs another one. Son is just plain acting crazy or 15, whichever you want to call it. Nope, not doing too well myself. I try not to complain though because I know there are people a lot worse off than I am and do not have the long time retirement plan I have ;) .

If 80 to 90 percent of the welding has already been done, you can just tell me what to do and maybe I can finish it off with my harbor freight welder?

My main concern is getting it to pass inspection for emissions.

That gas in the tank is now over a year old!

If the defib communicates with blue tooth. I think a good experiment to see effects of a welder is to have someone stand near a welder wearing a Bluetooth cellphone headset and answer a call. If the welder interferes with call quality, I'd say it could affect a defib device.

90% finished? We do need to weld the doors shut and fill it with quick creak. :)

Man, its been a year already? Metroschultz was going to let me try welding, but every visit is a project that gets way involved and frequently runs into over time.

At least my mother said she wouldnt mind me working out of home and would allow me to weld and plug in a welder. Cobbs metro welding? :cheers
