Wonder if drinking lots of fluid with your cheese frys might help? Probably a dumb question. |

My wife has tried that. It helps, not enough. Cuts down on the duration of pain, not intensity. You would be surprised at how much you want to learn when opting for elective surgery. (Except my ex-wife who woke up 2 weeks ago and made an appointment for last Friday to have a face-lift, can you say; "Joan Rivers"?) I believe I know more about the gastrointestinal tract than my GP. He and I have had several talks on this subject. |

I love this picture of my wife BTW. She went to visit her folks and they took this of her next to a sunflower. Her hair is covering her shirt so she looks like a 60's flower child. It is damn near impossible to think she weighed 280# 11 months ago.

Wow, This is the first I've seen of this thread - I happen to really find a hobby in learning about how anatomy and medical stuff works - had I kept it up in school, I think I would have made a go at medical stuff. I haven't had the chance yet to read all 8 pages, but I have read the last 2. I love your story about Alpo, that's great. My wife had the same surgery you had. She had hers about 8 years ago, and she has lost a lot - she is basically stable at a 'larger' state than what she wants, but she has other things going against her. What counts is that I like her just the way she is. I never knew the thing about carbs in general - but I knew that 'real' complex starches (sugar) would cause problems. For my wife, breads and starches have never caused a 'dehydration' problem that she can decern. Eating something too sweet (candy, sugars, drinking real pop, etc) will cause her extreme fatigue, headache, and eventually having diarrhea. I wish you luck with it man... you'll get back to real food soon enough - that may be my wife's issue, as she is back to basically full foods, just less of the food - I remember her first meal - didn't work out so well... we learned a LOT very quickly *grins* I'll keep reading your updates with great interest! |

Hey Paul! I just caught this thread and wanted to give ya two thumbs way up! I don't get on much lately... except before and after a GeoPalooza it seems. I'm guessing you'll be approaching my current weight of 223lbs any time now. I've been very inactive due to unemployment and packed on the pounds over the last 2 years. I also quit smoking, so that was a factor as well. I saw myself in recent picture and was shocked at how big I look lately. Just as I mustered the willpower to start a protein-only diet, the wife made a thick lasagna that I couldn't refuse. I'm going to draw inspiration from you and your wife and give it a go. I would love to drop at least 30-35lbs before snowmobiling season gets here...My sled will be faster without throwing money at it! Kudos! |

233# this am. Hacksaw, It'll be a few weeks before I get to 223#. My goal is to get under 200#. The doctors want me nearer to 180#. We'll see what's in store. The protein only thing works. But you need to keep up your calories too. If you go to low with the calories your body goes into 'Starvation' mode. After surgery, when I couldn't eat at all, I was there. But with zero calorie intake I still lost weight. My daughter is working the "Atkins" protein only thing as well. She has lost 10# in 2 weeks. She falls off the plan also, just have to get back on as soon as you realize where you are at. I gained weight (I did not need) when I quit smoking too. In 6 months I went from 310# to 360#. That is when my Doctor and I put me on the "Physicians Diet" This is the belt I bought in 2003, I was just topping 350# then. You can't really tell, but the total length is 60'. I was using 56 of those inches. ![]() ![]() Here is a closeup. I have punched holes in it for so long now it has this weird curly thing working. I am down to a 44' waist. I bought a new belt 2 weeks ago. I must say, it is one he!! of a visual reminder of how stupid you can be when you're not looking. ![]() I feel great! I was able to bend and stretch and reach wherever I needed to before. If you have ever replaced the heater core in a Taurus, you know how hard it is to get those three bolts under the dash. The only way is to climb upside down and stick your hands and head there to get at them. I could do it before, but it would leave me winded and light headed. I can do it now without any ill effects or discomfort. We have some older trucks at the shop. They have older seat belts. These belts were designed for a population that was less obese. I couldn't fasten them around me 3 months ago. Now I have room left over. All our trucks have air ride seats. Air seats are adjustable for your weight. I used to have them so pumped that they didn't have any bounce left. Now I get the nice cushy ride they were designed for. I never realized what I was doing to myself. Now I am exercising regularly and walking daily. I work with a body builder. He keeps a set of 30# dumbbells in the locker room. I am now using these before lunch3 times a week. Then I do 20 sit-ups, and 20 push-ups. I have even been able to do some pull-ups. Then clean up, lunch and a walk around the compound. When I was in my 20's (yes, I know we are all older) I could bench 400#. One rep. I did 480# once, and It almost killed me. I would bench 200# and do three sets of ten. I am back up to 100# three of ten. I haven't had the nerve to see what my max is yet. I don't have any one in the gym I trust that much. Gotta Go, Be back later. |

Congratulations on your continued progress, metroschultz! The belt picture and accompanying story are staggering. From 350 down to 233 is quite something. Exercising and weigh lifting.... You used to bench over 400? Wow! That's something. I'm enjoying this thread.

I was younger then. In much better shape. 50inch chest. I used to have pecs, now I have 'man boobs'. I need to replace the fatty tissue with muscle again. 30 inch waist. Tried for 500#, made it to 480#. Maybe if I had gone straight to the 500# I could have done it. Instead I went from 400# and up in 20# increments. By the time I hit 480#, my arms were jellied. I got it, but my spotters thought I was gonna drop it on my chest. You could see the anguish in their faces. Edited by metroschultz, Oct 19 2010, 08:11 AM.

232# this am. Metro Fanatic, I have already taken over 100# out of the car since I got it. That's just from my waist line. Starting to try more solid stuff. The trick is in the speed with which I eat. I used to go through a meal in minutes. Now I take 30 to 60 minutes to eat 2-3 ounces of food. Hamburgers still off the list. Fish is good, Eggs too, scrambled, not hard boiled. I do O.K. with roll-ups made of sliced deli meat and cheese with a stripe of hot mustard in the middle. Cheese is one of the things I haven't had any trouble with so far. and, Quiche is my new favorite food. Basically an egg pie with meat and cheese. I guess since the meat is chopped fine and the eggs are beat to death is why it goes down easy, and doesn't piss of my insides. The small amount of carbs (crust) gave me a fit at first. So I peeled the crust off. Now, I guess, my intestines have become accustomed to the onslaught. I feel a twinge, but nothing truly uncomfortable. I have found, though, that I am wanting more spice in my food. When I make the quiche, I put a sh!t ton of pepper flakes or cayenne pepper in it. My wife thinks it is the Mediterranean blood in me coming to the surface. I still miss Chili Cheese Fries. I may get daring and adventurous in a week or so and try some. I had one fry from the Grandsons meal a few weeks ago and it just about killed me. (figuratively speaking, of course) Maybe I try chili first. I plan my new food forays so I can have time to recover if something doesn't sit well. I hate the feeling when I have a dumping attack. (body trying to recover after eating food you can't yet handle) Barb had a deep yearning for a hot dog about 4 months after her surgery. So I took her for a hot dog. She got about half of it down when the dump hit her. I brought her home and she lay in bed for around 5 hours while her body processed the dog. The first few (?3?) hours she kept telling me she wished she were dead. I have kept that episode in the back of my mind ever since. I (luckily) haven't had one that bad. But I had a good role model. Even if it was just for what not to do. |

It's my own personal soap opera. 230# this am. Man, do I want a Hot Dog. Been eating quiche. Doing new flavors as we go. Made one with Crab and Swiss Cheese yesterday. Damn good if you like seafood. I love seafood, so it's mostly gone now. It takes me a while to eat anything. Speed or lack of time is my enemy. Man, do I want a Hot Dog. I remember my wife's outing with a hot dog. I aint going there. but Man, do I want a Hot Dog. I think this weekend I'll set aside some time to try one. Hebrew National. Soft inviting bun. A little kraut. (wonder how that will sit?) Touch of spicy mustard. "Hmm I love me some biscuits wid muthtard on them, Hmm." Maybe I will just have a plain dog with my organic ketchup. Guess I don't want to get to fancy from the get go. and, Yes I said organic ketchup. Not the stuff from Kraft either. For some reason that one sets off my stomach alarms. Regular ketchup is full of HFCS. Holy SH!T does that hurt. Tried organic from Trader Joe, did O.K. Tried organic from Kraft, did not do well. I couldn't tell you the difference between them. I can tell you Trader Joe's ketchup doesn't get that runny watery stuff on it like all the other ketchups do, even the Kraft organic. |

Shultz, I am glad to note your progress to date. Keep on doing what the docs tell you to do and progress will happen. From what I gather you are having a craving for a HOT DOG!!!!! Ok, got ya there. I was hospitalized with congestive heart failure some years ago. It was written off as "idiopathetic", meaning "we don't know", but you have it. Cold comfort that it was, one of the bottom line recommendations was a low sodium diet. I have been doing that ever since. I can tell you that Hebrew National dogs are good, but, Boar's Head brand have almost half of the sodium, and all of the taste you are craving. By the way, what is HFCS in Ketchup? |
