Hey all, new here but not to Metros, bought one new (XFi) in '93, had it 8 years and 140k reliable miles.
Anyhow, decided to get another one (maybe 2 by winter) and found a nice one, under 150k good body excapt the rockers are rotted pretty badly, just wondering if the rockers were part of the structural intergity of the unibody. We'll be putting 4-450 miles a week on it and dont want it breaking in half any time soon.
Thanks.

BTW, still have old records, pretty much averaged 48mpg with 80% interstate driving at 75 mph. Took it easy a few tank fulls and would get from 52-55 mpg.

The outer rocker is not too important. There is also an inner rocker structure. But once you have some good sized holes in the outer rocker, the inner is going to start rusting away, along with that edge of the floor.

If it looks something like this, the rust has likely spread past just the outer rocker.

The rocker panel areas don't carry the bulk of the stress. There is a frame rail that runs down the bottom side of the car which connects the control arms to a rear welded joyce structure. Although the cars are unibody construction, if these rails go, you're in trouble. The rockers can help disperse the weight away from these frame rails, but minimally so.
