Ok, first let me explain the Orb Name. The reason we named this metro the Orb, is that it was used as a paper delivery vehicle for Orbit Courier Service.
This is one of the Metros that I rescued last year when I purchased 8 (yes I said 8) Metro's for $500. After seeing that my wife's Metro, that you see in the background had the dreaded frame rot, I decided that it was time to give her a new Metro.
It is a 94 XFI car, without an XFI motor, I know what your thinking, why did you change the motor for a non XFI. Well, simply put, it didn't have the original motor in it when I brought it home, so I had to use one of the motors that I had laying in the shed to get her running again.
Here's what has been done so far:
Cap and Rotor
Plug Wires and plugs
Cam seal
Front seal
Rear Seal
Exhaust donut
Oil pan gasket
Valve cover gasket
Pcv Valve
Timing belt and tensioner bearing
Alternator belt
New flywheel and clutch
Output shaft seals
Front calipers
Rotors and pads
Changed tranny fluid, put in 75-90 to see if the tranny was any good, (It is) will change to sycromesh in a month or two.
Checked compression: 180 across the board!! WooHoo!! (wasn't sure, as I bought the motor from a guy after he pulled it from a car)

The first try starting it was a complete disaster, bad connection to the starter, and the cable got so hot, it melted the cable!! Yikes!! Disconnect battery fast!! Replaced starter, and nothing!! Now at this point all the reading that I've done on this forum starts to take over, and the first thing that comes to mind is, BAD GROUND!! Loosen them all, clean the rust off and retighten. Now keep in mind, this car has been sitting for 8 years in a shed, so there needs to be a little maintenance done to it. Got in and, WooHoo, she starts!! Now I'm a happy camper, so I let it get up to temp, check all the fluids, everything looks great. Now it's time for the maiden voyage, get in, back her up, head out the drive way in first, (everything seems fine so far) then I shift into 2nd, holy crap, major hesitation, I can barely step on the gas, and she misfires and acts like its not getting any fuel. Ok, back to the shed, first I thought the cat was plugged, so I loosened the bolts on the exhaust manifold and ran her with no pipe, nope that's not it. Next, it's time to check codes, holy crap, get me a pen, code 23, code 13, code 31, so I went to work fixing all of them, first the MAT sensor, I got lucky and found a good one in the shed, on to the next one, changed the MAP sensor, found one a car and put it on, and the code was gone. Then came the O2 sensor, good grief, I tried 4 different ones that I had taken out of 4 different cars, and you would think one of them would be good, well obviously NOT!! (hence the post yesterday about how to check an O2 sensor) So at this point ,I'm frustrated because the car still hesitates bad when you shift into 2nd or any higher gear. (this was a week ago)
So today I decided that this car has got to run before the weekend is over!! So I start with the O2 sensor again, went to the shed, and low and behold I have a exhaust manifold in the pile, take the O2 sensor out, put it in the car, reset computer, test drive!! Same crap!! Uhhgg!! Well, it's time to check the codes again, and how about that, no code 13!! But, this time it gives me a code 31 (MAP sensor) Now I'm getting excited, because I know what those stupid things can do!! So I grabbed another one from a car in the pasture, and installed. Reset the computer, hopped in and fired her up!! Wow!!, I could tell right away she was running better, now the big test drive. Drove out the driveway, and shifted into 2nd, (At this point I could hear angels singing, as there was no hesitation) I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about ,when your stumped on fixing something, and all of a sudden it just works!!
Well, at this point, now I can start fixing the rest of the stuff that needs attention ,before the wife takes over driving her.
Here's my to do list:
New windshield
New Struts (with an alignment)
New Shocks
New tires
Replace heater core
Fix exhaust
Find a nice white hood
Wash and wax, and a few other little details.

The moral to my story tonight is: Check your darn MAP sensor if your car is hesitating!!

Man, I'm gonna sleep great tonight!!

Congratulations on getting it sorted, but I'm a bit confused.

No Metro ever had a MAF sensor.

Wow! Color me jealous for snagging 8 Metros for just $500. I don't really have space for 8 but I'd sure try to figure something out. Congratulations on bringing another one back to life!

Oops, :die I had MAF sensor on the brain when posting that, since I was working on a different vehicle the night before.

Thanks for the heads up, I changed the post. :thumb
