My 94 Geo Metro's front wheels are very loose and the tires show the wear. When I took the tires off, I could move the brake rotor assembly in and out about 1/8" - 1/4". I replaced both trans axles (with CV's) about a month ago and the bearing on the right (passenger side). But the rotor assembly was still lose. I'm about to replace the bearing on the left (driver side). I noticed that the left steering knuckle has a stamp of "L2HH" on it, but the right steering knuckle has "4EL R" on it. I have an old parts car and probably switched them a little over a year ago, without realizing that they had different designations stamped on them. I found the old steering knuckle that has "L 4EL" on it, so am inclined to use that one. I'm can't remember why I switched the steering knuckles (old age). Is this a potential problem? The rotor assemblies that you fit the trans-axle splines in, both both have "4E-1" stamped on them. As I took the left wheel apart, the left rotor assembly slipped right off the left steering knuckle. Don't think this is a good sign as I think it's supposed to be pressed on. I have new bearings on order so will replace them in the steering knuckle. But I doubt that this will stop the lateral movement. It didn't on the right side. I have a '96 Geo Metro manual and it lists: 1 - Inner Seal, 2 - Inner Race, 3 - Inner bearing, 4 - Steering Knuckle, 5- Outer Bearing, 6 - Snap Ring, 7 - Outer Seal. However I think a '94 doesn't have that many parts. The parts list at a local Auto-Parts store didn't show: 1 - Inner Seal, 2 -Inner Race, 3 - Inner Bearing. Am confused. Any body have access to a '94 Geo Metro Manual to tell me what should be there? The rubber ball stud dust seals and the rubber caps on the steering knuckles are all a mess, with tears in them. Are these available somewhere? Also any thoughts or suggestions of what might be causing the front wheel lose-ness? RenoPete |

Worn lower control arm/ ball joints will cause looseness in the front end. You can tell if they are worn by having someone shake the wheel while you look. Here is more info....................... http://geometroforum.com/topic/3752570/ |

I had that happen on my 94. The bearings were shot. I replace the drivers side, and ended up having to do the passenger yesterday. I went to the junkyard and bought spindles with new bearings on it. It was cheaper than getting new ones b/c of sales and a lot less work. Now I have extra parts As far as the rubber dust things you can get colored aftermarket ones at autozone...idk if orilleys carrys them |

Johnny thanks for the link. The Control arm/ball joints was going to be the next thing I was going to tackle. I was pleasantly surprised at the low cost for the pair and confirmed it by going to the listed site. Hell of a lot cheaper than other prices that I've seen. RenoPete |

FOUND & FIXED THE FRONT END PROBLEM In case any one else runs into this! I got my 94 Geo Metro from a car dealer who was going out of business. It apparently had some work done on the front rotors. I went back to my old parts car and took the front wheels apart and found that each of them had a metal washer between the "Front Wheel Hub" and the "Steering Knuckle". These parts were missing in the car I was fixing. I got the wheel hubs off, inserted these washers and pressed the hubs back on. Voila! The front wheels are nice and tight with no play what so ever! I did not find a description of these washers in any of the documentation I found on the web. It was pure luck that I happened to find them on my older car. Hope this insight helps anyone else who runs into this problem. RenoPete |
