Well, Hell, OK I'll go first. One time I changed the oil in my old car (79 Camaro) and forgot to put the oil fill cap back on. Big ole friggin mess. Another time, same car, I over tightened the filter and put a crinkle in the filter, which led to a hole, which led to a massive oil leak. I caught that one before I killed the car.
I think the worst one was when I was helping a buddy rebuild the engine in his old bug. This was in my driveway/garage. We had the longblock finished and I looked over and saw a rod bolt that he swore up and down he had put in. No real big deal at that point, but we dropped a cylinder on the concrete floor when we were putting it back together and ruined a 120 dollar set of cylinders.

My biggest DUH moment with the Metro so far has been putting a new head gasket in while taking pictures of it as an example of the correct gasket to use (i.e. proper size oil drain holes). A week later while looking at the pictures I see the holes were in fact too small and in the wrong place. I still don't understand how in the world I did that.

Also, on the same engine rebuild I forgot to put the cam seal in and when everything was back together I started her up and ran a half quart of oil on the floor. Of course, I had to pull everything back apart to replace it.

Replaced the water pump when I was 15 and didn't adjust the timing afterwards; didn't even know what timing was. Car wouldn't start and had to be towed to the shop just over that.

Ran mine for a year like that.... matter of fact the pic of the wrong and right headgasket are mine.

My newest is I installed a cam that shakes the engine pretty good, so eventualy things will shake loose with out loctite, and some elbow torqueing... and my clutch leaver went loose on me and I lost my clutch.

2 things happened 1 I didn't keep rolling and no clutch shift the car back to the house, and 2 I didn't keep a cool head and find and fix the problem.... now I owe my co workers some money since I've been bumming rides, and one for towing the metro back to my house.

Who among us hasn't forgotten to put the oil cap back on after topping it off, only to have oil spewing all over the engine compartment??? Fortunately, the cap is always where we left it.....sitting on top of the air filter!!

All the pictures on my website concerning the head gasket are mine. You must be talking about something else.

no
The starter has nothing to do with timing.

My duh moment has to do more with not having the right tools.....lol
I was taking the leaf springs and rearend out of a late 80s ranger. after jacking it up I realized i didn't have any jackstands......o how convenient some bricks. Bad idea. decided to use the bricks. They didn't hold and the whole truck fell off and was sitting on the frame. The only smart thing i did was not lay under the truck.
and of course forgetting the cap for the oil.
