[/quote] Ya I'm responsible for maintenance retooling and such. Not a big deal as long as you stay on top of it. As for real wood we do have a whole building designated to milling hard wood. Real wood is still a big part of production. As for using particle board and mdf its more environmentally friendly to a point. A log can be sliced into many sheets of veneer and glued to mdf or particle board or what ever the core material may be. Now you have many sheets of book matched or slip matched or ? It means less rain forest being cut down. The type of work that comes out of our shop isn't like the wally world coffee table or book shelf. I understand what you're saying I have a hard time buying any new furniture. My sofa's over a hundred years old. |

started out with helping my grandfather in his machine shop...he made engines for racers, and hot rodders, most learning experience in my life...also learned I had a knack to put stuff together when it was given to me all apart...dad gave me my first set of craftsman tools @ 15 ( which I still have most of today, Grandpa's first rule "respect your tools" )...then he gave me my first set of cars...three Corvairs...all not running of coarse, I made my first convertible out the three of them, drove it for awhile then sold it for a lot more than I put into it...I took auto mechanics in high school..then got an automotive assoc. degree in college...then my masters A.S.E., as well as other certifications, did a lot of extra jobs along the way (A jack of all trades, master of none.) worked at various dealers...needed a change of career...took up nursing...got my LVN. lic.(exchanged blood for oil) ... bought my first severely used Metro (found out how easy it was to work on, and maintain) and did home health care...made very good money, but no holidays or weekends for over two years...missing a family life with my wife and kids...got a job with the Post Office as a body and fender man, over the years honing my welding skills and working with aluminum ...decent bennies...weekends and holidays off...still playing around with metros...it's my stress relieving hobby.

I just figured kids are the smartest stupid people on the planet. When I was one, my parents seemed incredibly dumb, but I'm glad they got smarter as I got older

I spent 15 years in the Army, truck driver, airplane mechanic, instructor, supervisor. after 10 years went to flight school, maintenance officer and test pilots course. Got out of the Army and worked air traffic control at Ft Hood for about 4 years, took a job flying offshore in the gulf for the oil industry for a couple of years then decided to get rich and infamous in the trucking business for the next 30 years. Sold my truck and retired in Nov 2009. Work for the census bureau from April until the end of August. I guess now I am officially retired. |

You have done a LOT of diffrent things! I think that is cool. I get sick of any full time job after 2-3 years. I worked for Nissan for 5 years and I hated it worse than anything! I am enjoying doing sveral diffrent things every week right now. I don't see how people stay at the same job for 30+ years.... Dan-O Edited by Turbo Dan-O, Sep 11 2010, 03:28 PM.

^ coming from someone who is no where near 30 years old. It takes a special person to commit to the same job for that long... |

My dad was at the same company 46 yrs. His dad worked in a cotton mill in SC for 50 yrs. Started out real young sweeping floors & was a foreman when he retired. He used to brag about making a whopping $2.15 hr when he retired. Told me that after his 50 years the company threw a BBQ for him and a couple other guys that were retiring too. They also got a gold watch & a "kick in the butt on the way out". No retirement, nothing. |

Its seems that a lot of the mechanic's and former mech's come from a really similar back ground. I also notice that there are a lot of vets here. My story is just a like all the rest. School, military, trouble. Work. I have worn many hats. Some I chose. Some just happend. I am pretty happy where I am at now. I make good money. (could be better). But I also have to enough to enjoy it too. |

I used to be the worlds worse for quitting jobs. Like Mr Murf said Thats why toolboxs have wheels. When you dont have a family to support it is fairly easy to tell a employer to "Jam It". Later on if you have family it is not quite so easy. While you job is still important , you realize you have a big time obligation to provide the very best for your family. It gets very quiet when you tell your wife and kids "I quit my job today"... Sometimes I have let my anger get the best of me and it has cost me and my family. I have been lucky. My job enabled me to raise 2 children. They aint prefect but they are doing ok and call me most every day. I really did not mean to stay on for 30, it just happened. LOL. :banana

I'm one of those 30 year (31 actually) guys. I work for a defense contractor as an engineering ordnance specialist. I help develop and test prototype hardware. Sometimes I get to travel to exotic places like Yuma,AZ in the summer and Ft.Greely,Alaska in the winter for testing ! My job involves alot of "hands on" work and I go from one project to another, so I never get bored. Did I mention that I get to blow up stuff! I really enjoy what I do and sometimes I can't believe the company has held onto me for so long! I took the job as a "temporary" position until I could fulfill my dream job- airline pilot. I started flying at age 16 and got my Commercial license while I was working at the local airport. I also got my Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license to work on aircraft while I was there. This helped get me in the door at my present job. When I started working at my job here in the late '70s, I used much of the money I earned to buy airplanes to build up my flying time and ratings. I had a great time flying around and managed to get my Airline Transport license and some college courses in engineering but I never got the dream job. I did get to see many of my flying friends go on to flying jobs and struggle with their careers. It's not all it's cracked up to be... My brother flies for a living and he's had to take cuts in pay and re-locations. I guess this had something to do with my decision to stay here. About the time I was interviewing for flying jobs, I was also getting married. That was another factor in my decision. Starting pay for entry- level pilot jobs was a third of what I was making at the time. I'll never really know if I made the right decision, but I have a great daughter and live in a nice area, so things could be alot worse... Sorry for rambling on. Must be the !
