Well it appears that the top gear....which I still cant remember the tech name for....is different.

On his all the gears have rounded teeth. On my top one they are squared. The bottom one is rounded. The old belt had square teeth that fit in the top and bottom. The new belt is the same size, but with bigger rounder teeth. These teeth only fit in the bottom. This makes every tooth fit a considerable amount higher on the top gear, then they slip.

So I'm wondering if the top gear I have is from a different year metro. My metro has been rebuilt and now that I'm thinking about it the color of the gear is a darker shade that what was around it. That may be insignificant but maybe. Since then the whole engine including the gear has been painted.

Thanks for the help EngineDoc I wouldnt have thought of the different teeth sizes or to make sure the tic mark lined up correctly.

YEP its from an 89 or similar. The belt on autozone is squared. God I wish I had noticed this yesterday. I ordered it online and it will be at the store tomorrow morning.

Your car must be a 93 model. Shows two belts for two differant sprockets for 93 model.

The vacuum system is 94 and so is the body. I bet when the last owner rebuilt it he just mixed and mashed a few parts from a 93. I tried to order it from tomorrow but it wont let me. I'll be getting up at 8 to call and order it and we'll be on the road by tomorrow afternoon!

Thanks again for the help. Where'd you get that shop light it was really good. I'm thinking about adding one to my tool box.

Thats my fishing light. Q beam. Bass pro or maybe even walmart. If you have any trouble in the morning let me know and I can pick one up at napa and come back out and help you get it back together. Sorry your having trouble when your supposed to be having fun. Just look your wife in the eyes and let her know how much you love her and things will look a whole lot better no matter the circumstances.

I have and shes not mad. A bit frustrated, but most of thats b/c she doesnt understand cars, but I have her help where she can. The insurance money from the wreck funded the hotel and I agreed to take 3/4 of the hotel expense out of my geo money. So its all working out better. Whats sad is for those few seconds it turned over and ran, it sounded better than it has in a long time. I think I had skipped a tooth a while ago, that would explain the mpg loss. I'll send ya a message if autozone gives me any trouble.

Thanks!

Sounds as if she's a keeper, good choice. Twenty years from now this will be a fond memory, the great disaster that was our honeymoon.
