Napa Air Compressor

Hey guys, I recently purchased an air compressor, ten gallons rated at 100 psi. I have a few concerns I'm hoping some of you guys in your endless wisdom could help me with. The compressor has a 1/2 horsepower motor and to be perfectly honest.... it's not quite enough, it takes about 10 minutes or so to fill up the tank to 95 psi. Are there any appliances that I could take an electric motor from that might be a 1 and 1/2 horsepower or perhaps 2 horsepower motor? Could i make it pump air more easily or perhaps in greater quantities by swapping out the cylinder and placing a larger one in it's place? My last inquiry is of the burst pressure of the tank, are tanks meant to generally take a much higher pressure then what their intended use is? I've air tanks are built with a 1:5 operating to burst pressure ratio. Can anyone confirm this or is it just another creation from the internet rumor mill?

Thanks again guys,
Javier.

With a suffient size motor you can change pulley size to make the compressor pump faster there by increasing the build up time. I have fooled with home made compressors with washing machine motors and such and after do so I would recommend either going to somewhere like grainger and buying a motor intended for a aircompressor or saving up and buying a suffient size ac that will perform to your satisfaction. That just my way of thinking.

Thanks EDG. Where would i find a larger pulley that would work?

@ Mr.Mullet, I know something bigger would've been more useful, but, I'm not what you'd call fiscally inclined at this moment. I don't have a steady job, and when i do get some pay it's very limited. Not to mention it was a deal I couldn't pass up. it was $40. If anything I may clean all the grease off of it and resell it for $80.

You can find pulleys at various places. Not sure in your area. I might have one. Any chance of a picture of your machine and the measurements of pulleys and the shaft size?

Maybe this will help, if you did decide to change pulley sizes you wouldnt want to change the pulley size much because a little goes a long way and just a half hp motor will not stand up to much changing.

You might be, as we in West Texas like to say, flogging a dead horse with this compressor. That little 1/2 horse motor just isn't going to do much more than it is now, plus, the compressor is still the same size. If you put a much larger motor on it you might end up overspeeding the compressor and kill it before long. Add to that the fact that you're only working with a 10 gallon tank (which depletes itself pretty quickly making the unit run almost constantly) and you'll end up with a compressor assy that's a pain in the rear to deal with. As someone else suggested, save up your pennies and get a good 30 to 50 gallon, five horse unit. You'll be much happier. :thumb
