You could do a leakdown test, in fact you can turn over the motor with a breaker bar with the plugs in.
you can tell a lot as each cyl comes up on the compression stroke they should all feel the same
Don't have a compressor, but that's a good idea with the breaker bar--plugs are in already.

Thanks!

Wow, what kind of business is that place running?
Been asking myself that!

Its a brokerage that draws on a network of salvage places across the country, and adds warranty and delivery.

The original engine to be shipped from New Hampshire was apparently dropped, rendering it unusable.

They scrambled to find this one in Pensacola--had it drop-shipped directly to me. The paperwork was still attached and showed they paid $200 for it AS IS. If I return it, they are out $200 for a crap engine and the shipping charges to me. Doubt its worth it for them paying return shipping.

I'm tempted to tell them its not worth it to me as a "project"--not the intended purchase--and ask for a 100% refund. If they pay return shipping, fine, they get it back. If they don't want to, I'll keep it.

Thought I'd do some kind of compression test, first.

Gotta admit I am surprised at the shape it is in. My engines were on a pallet, one wrapped in shrink wrap, both strapped down and both "pressure tested" and cleaned. :-/

Have you sent them pictures of the engine, or a link to this thread at least? They may not know the product is not a good representation of their business. :-/

Offered to send pix--they did believe me without them so no need.

They warrantee these things so must "play the odds" that their suppliers are truthful, but I seem to have ended up at the wrong end of that bell curve :(

I dunno, dude. I think you at least know what you've got with Gary's guts. This thing looks like a PITA looking for a place to happen. Might be just as well off to return that thing and do some open heart surgery on Gary. You might spend a TON of money either way.

On the other hand, this thing might be a gem under that oil leak.....

You're getting at my thought process . . . Gary's current engine appears to be in excellent condition for its age/miles. In fact, I'm still driving him around (just took a second load of antiques/junque/crappé to my wife's show in Lynden in Gary--50 mile round trip).

If the "new" engine is essentially free, a *slow* prep of it could take place, while using Gary in the meantime. If it costs more than around $100 for the carcass now hanging in the basement, I'm thinking punt!

Thanks!

The paperwork attached to it on arrival is from Kikers Auto Parts, 3010 W. Fairfield Drive, Pensacola.

Do they have a bad rep?

Thanks, billy508!

Still negotiating with the company engine was purchased from--sent pix and will find out more on Monday.

In the meantime, need to know whether its even wanted. Manual breaker bar test seems ok. Popped valve cover to check condition of rockers. Intake #2 had 1/8" play, others tight. More worried about the 1/4" gunk covering some of the head bolts. What do you think?

Thanks!

Oh no! What happened to the rest of Gary's story?
I'm reading along enthralled then *poof!* no more.
Did Gary survive the transplant?
Did the toad in the basement turn into a Prince?
Did Stately disappear into the basement never to be heard from again?
Has anyone called 911?
Or?
Are Gary and Stately happily hauling antiques with a new heart beating in Gary?
Sigh, who needs soap operas...
