Ok, now that I'm interested in a metro have been looking around town. And found at a car lot, a 2000 metro 5 spd, a/c with unknown mileage for $800.00. The lot was closed, but just went in to take a quick look at it. Was to dark to see the odometer, but assuming 100k plus. What kinda gas mileage, can I expect to get from it ? Gonna call the lot tommorow, and maybe go down for a test drive. Also on craigslist was a 97 metro same like my neighbors one. But this is a non runner, he said 111k on motor and it ran good until he lost a valve into the engine. Probably gonna need a new head and of course some wrenching. It's a 5 spd with new clutch and brake job He's asking $300.00 maybe I can get it for less I dunno. Please chime in with your thoughts, really hoping to join in on the fun with these cool little cruisers.

I have a 96 4 cyl 5 speed, I avg. 40 and have recently been hitting 42. The 2000 from what I understand is a more advanced system, so you should be able to baseline what I'm getting I would think, since I don't drive in any particularly fe producing manner. |

Ok thanks for all the replies, but am I correct to think that all 1.0 liter engines get between 41 city and 48 hwy. And all 1.3 liter engines get between 39 city and 42 hwy. Also what year and what models get the best mileage? I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one that can get the maximum mpg. I guess the hunt continues ? Again thank you all for the replies !!! P. S. For Ryan I haven't gone to the lot today, but after I googled 2000 metro I believe it's gotta be the 1.3 liter 4 cylinder.

I have a red 2000 4/AT as well. It's an OK car. I still prefer my 93. |

Definitely take the '00. One thing I don't like about the 1.3 liters in that year is the fact they're distributorless. And, like mine, they don't have fuel filters -- just a sock. Finding a '00 with a 1.3 and 5-spd. is rare. |

However, all 1.0's are equipped with a distributor, and they're just as tough as the 4. But, with a 2000, I'm curious what engine it is. Whenever I look on Craigs, Auto Trader, or eBay, they're 1.3 -- and mostly four-door. What I do like about the older Metros (pre-95) is the fact they have fuel filtes and no downstream 0xy. sensor. I believe my injector would not have failed at 110,000 if my car wasn't just relying on that sock. |

Hey Ryan, I am going down to the lot in the evening . Is there anything, special I should be checking the car for like potential problems. I know enough about cars to check for the usual, ie front end suspension, smoothness of shifting and smoothness of engine. Also is this tranny bullet proof or will I eventually have problems with tranny. Thanks Coche also the 80 hp man! Made me smile !!!

Don't tell them you're coming. If you get there, and the car is warmed up ready for you to drive, walk away from it. Always listen to an engine start COLD. Also, look at the front control arms, make sure nothing is rotted where the supports are welded to the unibody. |

Will do slander, i usually go to the car lots and look at a totally different car first. I get them thinking thats the one, then I let them think they forced me into the car I really want (lol). Is the 2000 model as dependable as the previous models before it? |

Slander is absolutely correct; arrive with no warning. The 5-spds in these cars, as far as I'm concerned, have minimal problems unless driven abusively. I still have the original clutch at 121,000 and everything is fine (except rust underneath the shifter itself, under the car). It rattles, and it's getting worse. Slander is also correct to check the "A arms" in front. If they're severely rusted, walk away. However, you live in Vegas, so I don't think that should be a problem, unless the car originated from the midwest zone and slowly moved westward ownership-wise. And, finally, yes, Slander is correct to listen to an engine when it's COLD. Cars tend to show their "true selves" in those conditions. The 2000 model is the same as the 1995-1999 models, except for the distributorless ignition I mention previously on the 1.3. Has the same Suzuki engine, and I can't think of many other differences. If there are, they are slight. |

I had a 2000 4cyl auto. It was ok but I was disappointed with the gas mileage. The 5 spd is probably much better. It was disto less which I think is a pain because you can't fine tune your timing. Also, it could be a 16V with teenie tiny valves. It's a bit trickier to rebuild but not by much. Setting the valves would be the only issue with the 16V head. You can tell it's 16V because 16V is stamped/molded into the cam belt cover. GL

16 valve engine is sex, and should not burn valves as long as you run good oil. |
