I guess the one valve from my 2000 with a BURNT chunk out of it was a factory option?? Unfortuneately a PO could've been running crap oil and changing it anually. YMMV |

I've had two 3/5s in the newer body style that both gave 42-43 mpg and two 4/5s that both gave 40 mpg. This is in my normal city/highway mix of day to day driving. Both of the four cylinders were the newer 16V engine that started in 98, it's a better, more modern head design with the added bonus of multi port injection and distributorless ignition. For the bast fuel economy, the 89-94 cars did much better, five more mpg for the base three cylinder, ten more mpg for the XFI model. My first Metro was an 89 XFI that gave me 52mpg in the same city/highway mix, 58 on the only pure highway trip I did, but I was running it pretty fast. The 2000 is never going to get that kind of mileage, it's bigger and heavier, but it's also a bit smoother and safer, and is ten years newer, less problems. |

10 years newer and compared to the xfi 30 more hp. It really depends on what your shooting for, if your shooting for ultimate mileage as Woodie says, the xfi or one of the base 3 cyls is the way to go. I like my bonus hamster car with its 74 hp, but I would have preferred the (even more strongly hamster-ed) 16v engine from 2 years later. Wonder if there is any way to swap heads and get it to run as well as this

2000 model 1.0/ 5sp...They changed the tbi system, it has more horsepower than the earlier models.. It a great car. My 2000 has 180k ..normal maintenance. don't use anything but 5w20 oil. 5000 mile on oil change use less than 1/8 of a qt. Get 50 mpg at 45 miles per hour around town. The AC will eat 5 to 6 mpg. drive with windows down most of the time. will turn off engine on long red lights. Hope to get 250k out of first engine. also I bought new.. Have a scangauge II on it ..mileage accurate within 2 percent.. |

Guys I can't believe it, the car was already sold . I guess, there are alot of people out there hunting these cars down. I feel like I let you guys down. I guess I waited too long because my neighbor has a 97 or 98 metro and he wanted $700.00. But it pops out of 2nd gear and after reading about DoctorBills tranny rebuild, I'm not sure about that car ? These days I try not to rush, and research before purchasing anything ? I guess this time this was a mistake . Snooze u lose on the 2000 anyway . I might go and drive my neighbors metro, but if I have to rebuild the transmission in the near future I might pass on it. Dang I feel like I let you all down, including myself . Well, weekends here hope you all have fun and relaxing 2 days. Again you guys are like 75% of the reason I was going to buy that 2000 metro. Your forum members are tops in my book !!! And I hope to become a bonafide member in the near or distant future. Wish me luck !!! Cheers and again many thanks for all the replies and all the support. The hunt continues, and I will let you know how it all goes .

I wouldn't feel that way, it isn't us that is being let down, nor yourself. Take your time and make sure the car you ultimately buy suites YOU, after all, your the one who will live with it afterward. A car that pops out of 2nd Murf would be best qualified to answer about, and since I know how small a time I spend in 2nd I doubt it would bother me too much, but I wouldn't pay $700. for the pleasure either. I went almost 6 months in finding my own, and passed up MANY along the way. Buck up, little camper the one your looking for will come along, probably like me when you least expect it.

I'll keep looking for the right one, but thanks for the kind words Bogs. I was just stunned that car had already been sold. I'll keep looking patiently and see what comes around the corner. WJ

First I've ever heard of that. They changed it for the last year? Seems unlikely. |
