Interesting history of Duct/Duck tape. Copied from Lowes Creative Ideas magazine Oct 2010 issue. Early 1940's Johnson & Johnson scientists create a strong waterproof adhesive tape to be used in the war effort. Originally produced in green, it is nicknamed "Duck Tape" because of it's water repellent qualities. Late 1940's GI's bring duck tape home to the American housing boom and begin using it to seal joints in air conditioning ductwork. Because of it's new use, the color changes from green to gray, and the name changes to "Duct Tape". 1970 After an oxygen tank explodes, creating a potentially deadly situation, astronauts aboard the Apollo 13 devise a lifesaving carbon-dioxide filter using plastic bags, cardboard, and of course, duct tape. 2002 Doctors at an army hospital in Washington state conduct a study using duct tape to treat warts: 85% of patients' warts vanished completely. 2010 A pair in Tennessee sets a new world record for duct taping someone to a wall- and the tape holding for a full minute. The new time to beat is 1 minute 36 seconds [pending Guiness World Record validation] So there you have it. Both names are right. |

I remember the late 40's version of the story, didn't know about the early 40s version. It was always associated with duct work during my formative years and of course, just about everything else later in life.

Thanks, Car Nut. Try stuttering, slurred speech, "I need to switch to decaf" or "Not on my planet." Or claim English is not your first language or call it "polyethylene, reinforced, multi-purpose pressure sensitive tape." When corrected you can simply say; "So." Not 'So what?" or they will continue talking.
