I know I asked about rear brakes, but now I'm interested in learning about the service life of your clutch. How long were you able to go before it started slipping?

Sub-question: Any internal manual transmission problems?

Mine have not failed due to wearing out and slipping. Both times one of the springs got loose from the hub and jammed up the works.

The first time I think was ~ 240K miles, the next one 120K miles later.

I hear it's over 9000.

I'm at 250k with what I assume is the stock clutch.

How long a clutch last depends on how good a driver you are! You ride that clutch it aint lasting long. Almost 200000 on mine and no clutch yet.

EngineDR is correct, It all depends on how you drive. Letting your foot sit on the pedal when your not using the clutch, shortens the life. Remember our clutches are only about the size of a saucer.

Well heck, the engine blocks only the size of a toaster, how much clutch you need for something like that :lol

Thanks, guys. I don't ride the clutch, but constantly merging onto highways throughout the week, I often rev-up very high in third gear before shifting into fourth. Then when I get up to about 60-65, I shift to fifth. Not the best behavior, but I hate it when people ride my ass.

The only problems I'm currently having (or have had since I purchased the car) is the assembly below the shifter next to where the exhaust runs. It's rusted bad and the shifter if loose (rattles in neutral).

I know Mullet and a few others here use the SACHS brand. When it's time for replacement, I'll probably end up ordering that. Can't wait to see how small it is.

Got a water pump on Rock Auto two months ago -- that's one tiny piece of equipment!

9000 what? What I miss?

Far as I know, holding gears (say, going to 60 mph in 4th) should have no effect on your clutch since its already locked in at that point. The major wear on a clutch is happening when your a.) starting out or b.) holding position on a hill (instead of using the brake to hold, I don't, some others I know do). Normal shifting and holding gears shouldn't be doing that much to it.

Unless, of course, you own a newer -> Mini Cooper <-, from reading 10 years worth of owners opinions, their trannies are complete :shit
