Sprint 3G service reverting to 1xrtt; Sprint 3G network

I live in South Central Texas.
I am using a Sprint U598 Aircard.
Up until the beginning of this week I was able to connect at EVDO-R A. Although I had Excellent signal the download speed was very slow. Less than 520 kbps. After many hours on phone with Sprint (ahem) technical support I was told to take the card to a sprint store to have it tested. I did and was told the card is no good. They ordered me another U598.
Received it two days later. It only connects at 1xrtt.
It does not matter where I am in the city or what desktop, laptop or OS I use.
Called Sprint (ahem) technical support, on phone for over two hours trying everything. Nothing worked to get me back to EVDO. Took card to sprint store. Was told card is bad. Ordered another U598. It too will only connect at 1xrtt.
Called Sprint (ahem) technical support again. After a couple hours I problem not resolved.
Called Sprint (ahem) technical support again and asked why sprint 3G is running in 1xrtt mode. No one can tell me why.
Anyone else experiencing this?

This is not a phone. It is an aircard. It is used to connect your desktop or laptop to the internet.

Sorry Dude,
I don't have a clue what your talking about.
I just figured out how to upload pictures last year.
I hope they can work it out for you.

Take the card back to the store.
Have them prove that the card is bad in their test equipment.
If it goes EVDO in their laptop, but not in yours, the card is good and you will need to reload the drivers on your computer, with firewalls down.
If their card does not go EVDO in their equipment, suggest someone in wireless engineering check the configuration of the network.
That may sound hi tech, but in essence, you're asking them to make sure it's set to full blast.

It appears the U598 cards are defective. I spent hours on phone with sprint tech support. They were not able to tell me what the problem was. I have an old Compass 597 and asked the tech to activate that card. Lo and behold it connected at EVDO Rev A. Although I still had slow download speed, an issue I have had with sprint for years.
On Saturday I get a call from one of the techs, she tells me she got a call from someone else in Texas that uses a U598 aircard. That person was only able to connect in 1xrtt. Now we have a pattern.
It really sucks that I have to use an aircard in order to get onto the internet.
Only other options I have are dial-up or satellite.
Dial-up is way to slow. Satellite is to expensive.
I stay with sprint due to having an older plan that is unlimited 3G.
Can not get that anymore with ANY of the carriers. They all have a cap on usage.
5GB, Well, satellite has a much higher cap but they also have a daily limit.

Edit: Forgot to mention that DSL is not available in my area.

Actually, there is one other option that you didn't mention that used to be an old dial-up standby, twisted pair through 2 modems. Not sure how fast your going now and whether it would be any benefit to you though.

I no longer have landline phone service. Nor do I have the necessary modems. Have my fingers crossed that the new aircard will not be defective.
Then I have to get sprint to make adjustments so I get faster speeds.
For about 30 days in a row this year I had 1.5 Mbps.
The fastest it has been in over 3 years.
Todays results:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 137 kbps (17.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 62 kbps (7.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 1089 ms

I connect through EVDO with Verizon and usually have no issues. This includes the laptop with the same connection.

Johnny and anyone else interested, would you do the speed test from this page Sprint speed test and then post the results?
Please post what ISP you are using and how you connect.

Well, either server is pretty far from me, from chi-town I got 22.83 down and 4.37 up, with a 47 ms ping. Atlanta was a real drag, 20.98 down, 4.25 up and a 57 ms ping.

Comcast cable internet.

20meg down 2meg up

52kbps is not horrible but not great for the price your paying.

even a shot gunned modem connection ($42 a month for 2x$21 core basic phone lines)

is going to net you AT MOST 8kbps 10kbps in bursts under extremely optimal conditions with 6kbps being your average (3kbps per modem on average)

even downloading a single mp3 would take a small eternity :-)

and that shot gunned connection won't really work for downloads. since you can shotgun a "single" download. each modem can handle "one thread" only and a download is one thread.

a web pages is multiple threads. the html file is one thread and each pictures and object is another thread so you can have each modem downloading a different "picture" doubling your page load times effectively.

alas no improvement for MOST downloads. if the remote servers allows and you use something like jdownloader or flashgot you MIGHT be able to take advantage of the modem shot gun and get 6-8kbps

even 1xrtt is faster than that.
