I am needing a egr solenoid for my metro and I decided to go on a junk yard run today. I live in Bella Vista Arkansas, about two miles from the Missouri border. I left about 8 this morning and got to the first yard in Neosho Mo. at about 8:45. No luck there with the part. Next was a jaunt down to Tiff City Mo. The junk yard there was in the middle of nowhere.. How do these guys survive with no one around to buy there stuff? No luck there either. I asked the guy where was another yard was and he said try this guy in Jay Oklahoma. So another 30 minutes later and I was at this paltry junk yard on Hwy 59 a few miles south of Grove Ok. No luck. He says go south and turn left before the four lane highway begins and go down that road for five miles and there is a junk yard on the left. Twenty minutes later I roll into bubba's and his little brothers yard (sounds of Deliverence in the background) and ask for a egr solenoid. No luck again. So out of the goodness of his heart he says, " You need to see this fellow in Jay OK" He has all kinds of metros in his yard. So, this is where it gets good. I travel for about ten minutes looking for "Speedy's" -no luck- I go through Jay, hang a right on 5th street, and wind my way around until I find 4th street. There on the side of the road, in his front yard is a '98 four door metro. I see the gentleman walking to his mail box, hmmmm, guess I won't have to knock on his door. I get out and introduce myself and at about that time I see four convertible metros sitting in his side yard. Well, it didn't take me long to strike up a conversation about our mutual passion.. He is a very knowledgable guy when it comes to these cars. I asked him if he had a egr solenoid and he said he might, but his shed had too much stuff in it to find a solenoid. We walked around to the back side of his house and low and behold, there was another convertible and another four door sedan. Along with a parts car being torn apart. I noticed it had the tranny still in it (5speed). I asked him if it was a 3 cyl or four cyl. He said it had a 4 cyl. in it. My excitement went throught the roof knowing I had a source for a 3.79 tranny. Then he took me to his shed. It was a building of about 15x15 and every shelf along the walls had metro parts in boxes on them. What a score. I couldn't get inside the shed because there was no floor space. Parts were every where. We chatted for about an hour. He said he would have the shed cleaned in a couple of weeks. I will probably go back. What a day of dissapointments and happiness. I drove about a hundred miles and finally got back home at three o'clock. The wife was not mad, so all is good. Just another day trying to keep my metro running. God bless terry |

Sounds like you had a great adventure Dayle but I couldn't help but to point out the obvious. A parts store. These egrs go bad quite often from what I've been reading. I think I would buy a new one and Aotozone has them for $130. But it sounds like you made a new friend! |

I was thinking of taking the egr solenoid apart and maybe cleaning the carbon deposits out of it. Since everything involved with the egr system has catastrophic carbon deposits, it can't hurt to tinker with the solenoid instead of paying $130. |

If you do, please take some pictures and post a "Guides/How to" for everyone. If it is acting up, and it won't repair its self, and it's not under warranty, so there is basically nothing to loose, and you should be able to re-assemble it without damaging it - go for it! I repair stuff for friends all the time using that philosophy.

I got a replacement EGR solenoid at a junk yard in Rogers AR today for twenty bucks. On the way home I was quite surprised at how much more vacuum it pulls compared to my nonworking solenoid. The old solenoid would only hit 18"Hg when you let off the gas. The replacement hits 22"Hg. I filled up today so I an going to see if this helps the MPG's at all. I'm hoping because i've been trying to find the reason my mileage went from 52 to 40 mpg. I pulled the EGR solenoid apart thinking it had carbon deposits within the orafices, but everything was pristine clean. So the only conclusion was the electronics within the solenoid died. Oh well, cheap easy fix. Still crossing my fingers. terry |
