Why can't I find a nice Metro?

All I want is a '94 (whatever that body style is) 5 door that is in good cosmetic shape. OR, I'd take a '96 3 door that was in good cosmetic shape. I cannot even come close to finding something nice within 150 miles of Charleston, SC and it is really bugging me.

Well, it took me 5 months of solid looking to get the one I got, which was not the one I was looking for at all. Funny how life goes sometimes, aint it?

I'd suggest widening your search at least a few hundred miles and get a one way bus or plane ticket to the cars location then drive back.
Perhaps if a member is near the new car they could inspect it for you, granted the seller has no pics of the horn/control arm area.
Just a thought. :hmm

Haha I just went through this! I have looked for and bought a lot of diffrent cars over the years but finding a Metro that was not 100% trashed was the hardest car I have EVER tried to find! I was almost at the giving up point when I came across one for the right price that was 10 times nicer than I was looking for. All I can tell you is just check the web everyday, don't give up, and don't settle for one you are not happy with. They are out there but it just takes time!

I had been looking for a decent 4 door for over a year, I found one in 7/10 shape right next to my house...they junked it. 3 more "promising" ones popped up on CL...all 3 fell through due to the seller, not me. I have since given up.

I would, however, expand my search to at least 200 miles.

When I said 150 miles I should have said 245 miles. I do the search probably every 3-4 days and have been for a year. I've only found one that comes close to what I think I want and it was $3900. The guy wouldn't even budge on the price...

Maybe I should say that those two cars above are what I wanted but they must be 3-cyl 5-speeds. I've found a few nice automatics but I don't want one of those.

If a geo runs, people are not turning loose of them! I been looking for one to play with myself for months. I hate craigslist but I look at it anyway. Always checking the classifieds. Always looking for them sitting around in parking lots. Seems most I have seen someones already been thru the engine and done something to do. Always strange to me why someone does all the work just to turn around and sell it. I think their work was not up to par most likely. I seen a funny craigslist ad not long ago said new rebuilt engine 80000 miles. LOL. If I am selling I cant get anything. If I am buying, it cost me a arm and a leg.

There was one for sale here for 2995 or so...it's a 15 year old car...that was 8995 NEW...

Speaking of engine mileage on Craigslist. My favorite is "This car has 284k miles, which is nothing on these little engines." haha what?

I drove 45 minutes to Jay Ok yesterday. I asked a junk yard guy about a part for my metro and he said look for this guy. 10 minutes later I was in this guys yard which had 8 metros in it. Today I went back to Jay Ok and just drove around the town. I could not believe how many metros were being driven around that town or in parking lots. Within five minutes of being in that town I saw three metros. One down from the McDonalds, one at the NAPA store and a couple in the high school parking lot. Man. That little town is metro heaven.

Point of the story is, just drive around and ask junk yard dealers or parts guys if anyone has some metros for sale. I did and now I'm going to ge a 4 cylinder 5 speed transmission tonight or tomorrow...

Check CL several times *daily* for local and surrounding regions. Make contact immediately with seller when one comes up, often they give priority to first caller/emailer.

Good luck!

I've seen three for sale around me recently. $300, $500, and $1100. The 300 probably had rust issues to hell. They said if you went through a puddle your feet got soaked, so it was probably going to fall apart. The 500 I bought and it needed shocks, tires, turn signal switch, hatchback struts, new exhaust, and major engine work.

The 1100 claimed to be completely restored, but that was long after I dropped 2k into mine.

Distance is unimportant f you want some thing special.
Last year I got a NICE 92 metro wagon from Arkansas. It cost $2,500 for the car and $500. to have it delivered to my door in Ohio. At 17 years old it is in better shape than the 92 I had in 96.
Under the hood it looks cleaner than some new cars I've seen.
BTW I found it at
