Here is a topic so far off the wall for you boys... My kayak paddle is 7' long and during padeling, every time I raise one end to padle with the other end up water runs off the blade and down onto my lap. Sure their is a drip rings on the padle but they only do a little. I was thinking of making a spray skirt for the kayak. An idea popped into my head so I tried this..... I put Rain-X on one of the paddles and tested it out in my hot tub, as I raised it up it drips dry so fast water barley had time to reach the drip ring, I wonder how long it would stay on the paddle. Wow the other paddle just holds the water, like a film of water sticks to it. I walked back into the house and out to the garage and their is still a bunch of water film on the untreated paddle and the rain-x one is dry...I'm sold ,can't wait to take the yak out and try it. Has any one tried this? Better still , does any one on here have a kayak???? ![]() Edited by woodman, Sep 21 2010, 09:42 PM.

You're just going to go in circles like NASCAR unless you do that other paddle. |

You guys are a riot.... And so is another guy on a boat building forum...Quote: (Hey you might just be on to something. I mean, with the way it repels water, you could maybe just hold the paddle in the water and it would repel itself upstream. I'd experiment though. I'd try putting Rain-X only on one side. That way I'd have more control over which direction I went.) And on a more serious reply 'from a fellow Missouri fisherman' Quote: (It works as a dry fly floatant in a pinch. You have to treat them ahead of time and let them dry. I assume the Rain X will not have any adverse effects on a plastic paddle. I was thinking there was some warning about using it on plastic. Would be a help in the winter to keep the ice buildup off.) Edited by woodman, Sep 22 2010, 07:35 AM.

I've never used the stuff (Rain-X), but why wouldn't any good wax do exactly the same thing? And whats up with the plastic paddles? After that job, I expected to see hand crafted wooden two tone paddles to match

My kayak paddles have little circles of plastic on them near the handle on each end that keeps the water from dripping all the way down to my hands, you can probably buy them somewhere. here ya go: http://www.amazon.com/Kayak-Splash-Guards-Sold-Pairs/dp/B000Y4JFB2 "Greatly decreases water drip and splash back from paddle. Keeps hands and lap dry." Edited by mcmancuso, Sep 22 2010, 11:27 PM.

As a sea kayaker who's been around forums of all sorts for a while, I am surprised I've never heard of someone with that idea......AS A KAYAKER, i find it utterly silly, but then again my idea of FUN includes ocean rock gardening and surf paddling, where being pounded by a breaking wave is the norm, and rolling is a part of the game. I always use a sprayskirt, and none of my paddles have drip rings, even what I use for touring. |
