I found one behind a guys house. That is a wild car! It has 14" aluminum wheels, diffrent body parts, interior, a 1300 DOHC Suzuki engine, and a ton of other stuff. I bet those cars run good! I might buy it if the price is cheap enough. This one is rough. Does this car have the best transmission that everyone is after?

The best? Best for that engine maybe, pretty sure its the 3:52.1 tranny. Note though that the Swift dohc *is* an interference engine (pretty sure, if not I'm sure I will be corrected).

Note also that it is by far the most powerful available for these cars, I believe around 100+ hp.

Yea, I ment the best gearing for the highest FE on the interstate.

It will certainly let your Metro engine run at the lowest possible rpms at a given speed, but a lot of how much you can do that will depend on your surrounding area. Is it hilly? is it mountainous ? Is it like a table top?

If its merely flat or slightly hilly, you will probably be able to keep the 3 cyl in 5th on the highway and have the lowest rpms available. Any serious hills or long grades will have you down shifting to 4th or maybe even 3rd with that ratio. Like almost all things, its a compromise.

If you want to see the real world effects on the cheap, get a tire diameter that is the same as the gearing ratio for the front tires (rears will not have much if any effect) and see if you can drive normally or close. If that works out good for your nominal driving patterns and you rarely go outside of those, then your golden.

From this excellent -> posting <- by CB, go to the "Tires effect on gear ratio".

I am actually really happy with my stock 93 1.0 trans(4.11 I think?) and 12" wheels around town but it only picks up at best two MPG on the interstate(52/54). I like my road trips also! Maby I should just get a set of tall 13"s and swap them and the speedo gear for long trips. My trans is still in great shape!

GT/i are all 4.1 from the factory, only SOHC 4cyl's have the 3.52, DOHC engines are interference, and switching to 155/80/R13 will net you the same difference as switching to the 3.79 XFi gear ratio with 12" tires
As a warning, switching to the 3.52 ratio has shown to decrease mileage because there's too little power in the 3 cyl to turn that tall of gears. you have to be a real hypermiler and deal with really slow accel to get good mileage with that one.

Get the 4.39 from a 95+ or a convertible if it's a GTi.

Just FYI on the transmission switch, should ye be brave, the differential in the GT box is a lot stronger than the normal 4.39, change the final gear set, or the differential so you get both the 4.39 ratio and the strong diff in the same box :D that's my plan for my trans :D Then cryo treat the whole thing so it will never break!

To consolidate the various points, GTi's had the same final drive ratio as the base and LSI Metros 89-94, with a stronger differential.

The engine is 100 hp and is in fact interference.

They also came with four wheel disk brakes, power windows and remote control mirrors were an option.

Power windows? Woodie, do you happen to know if they suffer from the same opening issues as ours do, i.e. bending rod arms/pinch point on the front? Just curious.

Yes, they hang up exactly the same, as the problem is with the tracks and rubber seals. They're less likely to to get bent into a pretzel though, because the motor only applies so much power, then stalls. The real damage to the window mechanism comes from the operator who just cranks harder and harder rather than trying to find the cause of the problem.

Ah, I thought perhaps they had a different tracking system to eliminate it on the electrics. Thanks for the info.
