Geo mud buggy?

I have went through this in my head many times, but it's cloudy up there sometimes :stoner

Most of you know that besides the Geo addiction, I also have another hobby and that is my mud truck :cheers

I would love to have a Metro represent down there, but putting a Metro body on a 4x4 chassis is not the same as have the actual car do the job. This might sound crazy, but I see many lightweight sandrails and VW powered buggies at the events and they get through the mud with no problems, but what could be done with a front wheel drive Metro?

First off, the car is already underpowered. Massive weight reduction would need done including removing all glass and making it a "Trailer only" vehicle and not street legal. I could run the exhaust right out the hood, upgrade the engine with performance parts, and modify a snorkel intake system for it.

The second issue is ground clearance. I have seen some pretty knarly 13" ATV tires online that look like they would do well in the mud. I would even cut out the fenders if need be to make them fit.

These cars get around pretty well in stock condition even in snow and I know with the right combination I could make it work.

Nothing set in stone yet, but just thinking :hmm

What about putting the engine and trans combo in a sand rail, tube chassis. With a set of big assed mud boggin tires. With a car that weighs only about 800lbs. It would kick ass. And I would use the 4.39 gears. SRD offerd lower gears. But...... Cool idea JM

Mud, Geo Metro, high powered G10 just don't seem to mix. :-/

Hovercraft, maybe, gliding over the mud some how, like a belly pan and 10 coats of Rain-X. <- This happens when my head gets cloudy. :lol

How about two sets of engine/tranny. One in first gear up front and the other in reverse in back. 4 wheel drive mud bogging metro?

Please just call me; "Schultz"

Years ago,
when I had money to spend,
I thought about this;
1989 Sprint Turbo +
1993 Geo metro +
1993 Subaru Justy.
The older Justy is another Cultus clone, but with 4 wheel drive.
I wanted to build the first
Turbo Metro 4X4

But you can have the idea if you can make it work.

I think it would probably work out pretty good, actually, especially with a full belly pan to slide on.

Come to think of it, I believe I saw a geo on CarDomain with atv tires on the front. It looks pretty badass I wonder if I could find it again. :hmm

Weight is going to be a big problem.

Are you planing a full cage? the added weight of the tubing will be pretty much made up for by striping everything from the car. new fuel cell etc.

are you thinking N/A or Turbo? at the point where you going be needing to upgrade the horse power so much the cost is pretty much a negligible difference.

are you basically planing on race prepping the car?

No roll cage. Gutting the car except what it needs to run and keeping all the seats and seat belts. I am thinking a 4 cyl auto would do the trick.

Have not made a full decision, but would probably want the lighter 89-94 model. ATV tires are readily available in 12" sizes. For ground clearance I would need 25x8-12 or something along that line. A complete underbody skid plate would be a must.

Lighten it enough and put big enough tires on it it may float on the mud LOL...

I wanna do the same thing to a subaru bahja wrx (the turbo one) then put the drive train from a wrx sti impreza in it.

Make shure you do a good write up... I'm gonna back half a 4dr hatch sometime in the future, not shure what I wanna do yet. Its either gonna get bagged or skyjacked

The wife and I have already discussed this and it's gonna be "game on" for this winter project. Not sure what car will be used for this project either. I will either sacrifice one of ours or find a donor.

I might try and contact a few ATV tire companies and see if I cannot get a sponsor to truly test their product in exchange for a link to my site that generates 10,000+ hits per month along with the traffic Yankee Lake Truck Night generates.

The minute I begin the project I will post it in the Project Forum.

The combination of tall, aggressive ATV tires, light weight, and a complete underbody skid plate on a FWD platform sounds like a recipe for tons of muddy fun!
