$20 bucks and 5 days repairing tranny

Fastest Hampster EVER

My wife bought a 98 Chrysler Town and Country LXI with 220K miles for $1500. While driving it home from the purchase it started puking tranny fluid. I looked into the cost of replacing the transmission and found it would be $1800-$3000. :holycrap So I then did further research on the internet. Turns out the likely problem is the front main oil seal on the transmission pump and rear gasket within the transmission. Also the axle seals were toast. So I went down to the local O'reillys and Dodge dealership and priced the parts, about twenty bucks. :thumb Well, then and there decided to do the replacement of the all said parts. I started on saturday and finished with the transmission removal last night. Today I was running back and forth to town for little niggly parts. After I cracked the pump away from the bell housing, I was amazed at how clean the internals were. Absolutely no metal what so ever. No torn gaskets or worn parts. I have a tranny which was taken care of with great care. After a wasted day I now have the transmission under the van waiting for the morning to install it.

The first thing I noticed about this transmission is it's just a bigger version of the metro's transmission. Heavier transmission, larger bolts, etc. But fortunately I have the internet and got all of the instruction on the disassembly process.

Secondly, I LOVE MY WIFE, not only did she buy a great van for a cheap price, she has been right next to me during this entire process. She is up to elbows with grease. :D Makes me glad that she is willing to help try and correct the problems with the vehicle, and not just gripe that she "bought" a lemon. I can't be happier for her to learn how things work.

Well, I've put in about 20 hours up to this point but every minute is just one more memory logged into my brain so when the tranny actually goes kaput, I will have a much easier time with the teardown and install. A complete rebuild kit costs $160-$250 so I am comfortable with redoing it if I have to.

According to the Dodge and Chrysler forums if i were to keep the transmission fluid changed every 30K miles then I should expect a good long life out of the transmission.

But the best part of this whole endeavour is my wife and how cooperative she is with helping to fix the problems.

:thumb Sounds like you found two of them!

Btw-my wife *loves* her '99 T&C, has put on 100K more miles since finding it four years ago.

My wife used to work with me also. You are right, it really makes things better when you can share problems and projects. Nice to have another set of eyes and someone to say "But I think that goes over there". LOL Good luck with the project. :banana :banana :banana

My wife helps if I ask, and when its her car (before we stopped working on it) she was there every step of the way. It makes a HUGE difference.

My wife would help if I asked her but then that would cut into "My Time" and having fun drinking beer and wrenching. I can see her enough when I get home!

You got that right :cheers . Mine's the same way. Why do you think it took me 4 months to do my brake conversion ?... Waited for her to go away for a weekend. What a peaceful weekend that was for me :banana

I count myself lucky as well, my wife used to drag race her car and taught herself to repair them. One of my favorite pictures was shot on a night where she had already gotten dressed up for a night on the town, and had to clean off her fingers on the little black dots on the dress after making an emergency repair.
:lol Priceless :lol
