Is anyone willing to post a step-by-step guide on replacing front wheel bearings on a later-model Metro? I posted a thread regarding this about a month ago in the Metro Tech area, but didn't get enough information (including photos) where I would feel comfortable doing the job myself. I've never had to replace the front wheel bearings, and there is not guide for this in my Chilton's manual. I looked through the "Guides/How To" area last night, but didn't find a guide for this.

I appreciate it, man. Just need to get to it sooner than later; dont want to wait until it's too late. Can't afford to take it to the shop right now. |

In the mean time, I know it helps to study up on these things so maybe these links will help? any one post a thread for newer front wheel bearing How do I replace front wheel bearings Of course I tend to buy the parts then tear it apart and see what's going on. Manual? We don't need no stinking manual! |

Make sure you have deep pockets $$$$$$. When I did mine each bearing was about $50. I had a neighbor with a press push the old one out and the new in. You will need the press, because there is no way to hammer them out. |

Yeah, I did price them and I was somewhat astonished they're about fifty bucks a piece. I can get my hands on a press... |

Damn, that helps a lot (two links). Thank you. So on a '98, it's a one-piece bearing? What does that mean? |

So, it's not two...or even three pieces. It's a piece, like one piece, right? How do I know if the inner or the outer bearing is bad? Or, is it now "combined" into ONE PIECE?

I am pretty sure it is just 1 wider bearing. So you just have to buy 1 expensive bearing per side, instead of 2 cheap bearings per side. |

You are welcome on the links. Let me explain. Let's say The Wife's Geo is making noise... Johnny says one bearing, the manual says one, two or whatever, so on Saturday I hop in the car and drive to the parts store and watch the counter person look through the computer and show me the part(s) and I buy what's recommended that fits what I reason is going to work; one bearing, each side. I pull the offending wheel/spindle apart and get it on the bench, tap out the bearing and then and only then do I realize who I can trust, do I have to stop the earth's rotation, who's not on my Christmas list, am I going back to the parts store and am I going to be working on this all night and into Sunday ...or not. If I have to put it back together because I call the parts store and they can't get the correct part in until the next Decade, I start thinking ...the next time I do this I will be an "expert" and it will take less time because I have "experience." If I get my Wife to give me $1 I'll call myself a "professional" (participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs) - Merrima-Webster. I then log on to www.justin.tv/ and watch an auto race, football game or mindlessly entertaining movie. The distributor and rotor I ordered are coming in today. Pray for me.

It is SOLD as one piece, one part number. It consists of two bearings that can be taken apart, but can only be purchased as one "bearing assembly" If your car came with 12" wheels, it has the crappy brakes and two separate bearings with a spacer in between. If your car came with 13" wheels, it has the vented disks and the "one piece" bearings. |

Yeah, I have the 13" wheels. I'm also going to have to rent a bearing driver for this job... Jellybean: I'm going to check out that site now. Bad Bent: What did the distributor and rotor run you? Where did you order them from? |

It's also odd I visited http://www.autoparts123.com and they're only offering two front inner bearings for less than ten bucks. Doesn't seem right. Then again, this site is not offering nearly as much as it has in the past. Can't even order engine parts from there! On RockAuto, TIMKEN brand: TIMKEN Part # 510001 1.2992 in. Width FWD; FRONT INNER $37 a piece Edited by Ryan, Oct 2 2010, 10:04 AM.
