I watched this show on TV last week called Collapse by Michael C. Ruppert. He talks about how we hit peak oil back in the seventies and our government knows this and tries to hide this from us. He said that's why Jimmy Carter put up solar panel on the White House. Big Oil took them down when Busch was in the WH. That's why we built a permanent military base in the middle east. He says that it takes 50- 100 times more cost to drill off shore for oil. If the towel heads are drilling off shore the oil over there is almost out. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are building tourist cities because they know the oil is almost dry. He says the oil sands in Alberta is too oil energy intensive to be worth it. He says that solar and wind will be our only power soon. Also with a big oil production in the 1900's we saw an increase in population. If oil production decreases then so does our world population. Everything we do or buy takes oil and a car tire takes 7 gallons of oil to make it. It was an interesting show. Have any of you guys watched it? |

i've deleted three responses as they were to long a few of the points were; we have oil here not being used alaska , montana, west coast , and mexico. the sooner the "ragheads oil is gone the sooner they will be gone, let them go back to killing each other without dragging the world into it. I drive a geo to save money not to prolong our dependence on foreign oil, with that maybe we should all drive suvs in full time 4wd . oil is still used because it is the most efficient energy we have, wind and solar has not proven to be the answer it's undependable and not enough power some do not think it ever will be the answer |

Yes, that "peak oil" theory has been around for quite a while, keeps proving to be pessimistic because we keep finding oil. Just like the religious cults that claim the world is going to end on a certain date, they have to keep coming up with an excuse as to why the date has to be moved off again and again. As jellybean has pointed out, we have pretty large reserves that we're not using. If the price goes up, we can tap those and drivie it back down again. Plus, if the price goes up due to reduced supply, solar, wind, and batteries will become sensible (for the first time) and reduce demand. Jimmy Carter put up solar panels because he was a bleeding heart idealist, all theory and no reality. Ronald Reagan had them taken down ("Big Oil" does not make decisions about the day to day operation of the White House physical plant) because the cost of maintenance was far more than the yield. Obama is making a big noise about doing it again solely to try to win back environmentalists who are pissed because he has done nothing for their cause despite having a Democrat Congress in his pocket. What is being ignored is that George W Bush had a partial system installed, and has a huge solar and groundwater system at his personal home in Crawford Texas. The way they obviously bent the facts in this documentary in order to make Republicans look bad should have you looking very hard at anything said. |

Who cares? Just budget more for it until an alternative is available. All of you are already doing the right thing, driving a Metro. |

I'm not saying his movie is all facts but hearing both sides helps you decide what to believe. He said that with current oil consumption the Alaskan reserve would only last 11 days. We do keep finding oil but not huge reserves like the middle east. I don't know when the oil will be gone but it has to run out at some point. It is not an never ending supply. He said oil prices will keep rising to the point where no one can afford it then we will see a collapse. I'm a slightly optimistic realist. I don't believe everything I hear but I don't automatically dismiss it either. I filter the BS and take with me logical parts of a discussion. My dad for instance is almost the opposite. He dismisses almost everything he hears even if it's logical and only believes what he can see for himself and maybe not even then. |

CB, I'm just trying to have an intelligent discussion about something that interests me. You have a tendency to answer a thread without reading the whole thread. It may not interest you, so if it does not then don't read or answer. You have helped a lot of people including myself. So thanks for the help. I don't have a problem with my budget and yes a metro is awesome for saving money. I am not a penny pinching tight ass by any means. I just hate giving my money to the towel heads that despise Americans. We made them rich beyond all comprehension and they want us all gone. When I'm driving my metro I'm giving them less and when I fill my tank and run all week on that same tank it's like a big "F-you" to them. Some thing are impossible to understand when you are young. I was 18 once too. When you have a wife and kids to think about your thinking will change too. |

Ah once again, my words don't "read" like they should be "read". "Who cares?" isn't an attack at you, I mean "Who cares? We can't do anything about it, we might as well make the best of it." I read all of it, I understand it entirely. There's just nothing we can do about it. Why is American gas soooo much cheaper than Europe's gas? Edited by Coche Blanco, Oct 9 2010, 11:09 AM.

Taxes in Europe to feed the infrastructure. When I was in Germany in the 80's you could buy a train ticket for 5marks ($1.50). Then you could go anywhere you wanted. Ride the train from Bremerhaven to Dortmund, get a transfer and ride the bus to the concert. If you were really good, you could talk the bus driver into another transfer and get home for free. |
