Anyone who has had chicken pox has the potential to develop herpes zoster (or shingles) later in life because the same virus that causes chicken pox also causes zoster. The virus remains in a dormant state in certain nerve cells of the body, anywhere from a few months to several years. At some later stage in life, the virus can “reawaken”, causing zoster. . So Why you might ask, do I need to know the information? A week ago I would have agreed with you. I dont think I have ever known anyone who has or has had the shingles.. Now I do. It seem to happen in people over 50. I will not bore you with all the graphic details and cures as I am sure you will quickly research the problem if it happens to you. I can tell you that the piss from a one winged purple bat nor the tears from a hundred virgins or anything in-between will help the pain. The supposed to be a vaccine that be obtained from a drug store for around 25 bucks. Now they tell me.

They have had the vaccine for a couple of years now. I had shingles about 15 years ago, I must have been lucky, some lady doctor in Boston gave me some salve to put on, I think it was gone in a few days to a week. I guess my question is, should one get the vaccine if they have already had the shingles. |

I had shingles about 10 years ago. It went from my left eye brow to my hair line. Talk about painful!!!!! The doc gave me some amtriptaline pills and said take one every 4-5 hours. I was knocking back four every hour and it did not help the pain. To this day I have residual pain above my left eye brow. To alleviate the pain the only thing I could do was wet a towel and wrap my head and pull it very taught. Somehow that restricted the flow of blood and eased the pain somewhat. I do not recommend getting shingles. I don't even want to wish it on an enemy. It is awful. It also made me look like I had half of my face burned. Scabs, oozing puss, and bloating, would have won first place at a Halloween costume party. It sucked. |

O.K. Billy 508, Yes, I had chicken pox as a kid, so I am an unfortunate candidate. No, I don't wish to have this happen to me. What does one ask for when it comes time to go get inoculation shots (flu, pneumonia, etc this year)? |

Bennie442 I really dont know I think some drug stores offer it. I will make a effort to find out. If I had even a small clue this could have prevented I would have done it. Ignorance is no excuse. If any others can help with this I would appreciate it. Sorry I did not read your post correctly This from the CDC site .......................................The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain that can follow shingles is to get vaccinated. Adults 60 years old or older can receive a single dose of the shingles vaccine, called Zostavax®

I have heard of it and heard it is painful. If I can avoid it I will gladly do it! Have you ever had the pain of a kidney stone billy? I have heard that is terrible as well. Glad to hear about a drug for shingles, I will file that one away in the back of my mind should the need every arise to need to know it! |

I had shingles earlier this year....o yea im 22. Its a virus so there is no real cure. If you start getting signs of shingles you have to get it taken care of immediately because all they can do is stop the virus. They can't make you heal any faster. Believe me I had a very nasty case of it on my face on my lip/that spread up the side of my face. The medicine I took was for shingles, chicken pox, and genital warts. gross. Go to the doctor asap if you get it because it will literally spread like wild fire overnight. also it follows your nerves.

Last week I had a slight headache a place on my shoulder was hurting, maybe like a very bad pimple or a small boil. I dont do Doctors. I t has been over 6 years since I have been to a Doctor, exceptions are accidents and for stitches. Friday night my head hurt so bad I literally could not see. My ex came by and toted me to a Emergency clinic type of place. They said I had a infection in a Lymph node and gave me some and antibiotics and some cream. Sunday am I had a rash on my should and did not feel much better. I had a pain that seemed to shoot right though my temple. Think maybe 8 out of 10 on a hurt scale. I go back to the Clinic. I tell them about my severe head ache. They start to hassle me that I might need to go to the hospital for a CT(?) or some brain scan stuff. I tell them that is not a option and I will not go. So we talk some more and the head nurse lady gets involved. She listens but this time she figures out that besides the headache I have the rash, I show her the rash and she says ok and quickly brings in the Doctor. He says "Ya got de Singles" The rest is history. I was lucky the nurse listened to me. I could have spend a lot of money and time on Brain scan stuff when it was something else. So, the first Doc missed it, but the next one did not. I guess the rash is the clue. If you think you have it, Get to a Doctor quick. Long story about me and Doctors that I will not get into right now. I have a bad heart. Have for many years, I guess. When they listen to chest they always say "Hey you have a heart murmur" What are you doing for it? When I reply "Nothing" they sometimes get pissed. LOL Thanks for reading the long sad story. LOL Hope it might help someone. Later

Well, I hope you are feeling better, billy. I had chicken pox late, like around age 25. No big deal for me. "Maybe not noted before but also one of the side effects of Zoyter ridus is over posting off topic and meaningless things on the Geo Metro Forum." We understand. At least you have a reasonable reason (excuse) and it's only a temporary side affect and not a permanent affliction like being facetious.
