I just fixed mine. If your tired of driving around with no low beams and having to use the DRL's. There an inexpensive fix for it. However you won't have DRL's anymore. Just good old fashion manual high/low beams. Mine is a 97 Metro LSI 1.3 auto so the color codes might not be the same. I'm kinda big, so it was easier to take the drivers seat out. Then just crawl up under the dash area by the steering colume. My DRL module was an aluminum box so I don't know if others are plastic. It should have a connector with 10 wires going into it. A way to make sure that it's the right one is to unplug it. Your DRL's should stop working. Then locate the red/w white wire. It should be the biggest in group. According to wiring diagram submitted by Johnnymullet it is #2. Then locate the red/w green wire. It should be #1 in the diagram. Mine looked more like red/w black instead of green stripe. So then have somebody look at the headlights, turn on the switch to low beam then with a small wire or paperclip stick one side in the red/w white and then quickly tap the red/w green terminal. The low beam should blink when touched. When everything is for sure cut the red/w and red/green and wirenut or solder and heatshrink the two wires together. Tape up the connector. Through away the module and enjoy the simpleness. ( Be advised. This repair is in the event that your car doesn't have the common melted connector in the fuse box. )
Big thanks here. I had this same issue, and unplugging the connector did nothing for me on my 99 hatch. I ended up bypassing it like this.

I took some short solid house hold wiring, hammered the ends flat, and stuck them in the connector. In the picture its a bit hard to see, but its the upper left pin connected to the lower right pin (with the tab on top). My wire colors match what 97bigblock1.3 said in his post. I found this easier than cutting and soldering or using crimp connectors.

Once I had the jumper working, a bit of electrical tape was added to avoid any shorts. I stuffed it back up under the dash and I had lowbeams again.

Alright, so apparently the fix did not work. I was at work yesterday and a coworker noticed my lights were still on... Very odd, but sure enough, I couldn't get them to turn off. So, I pulled the jumper and off they went. When I tested it the night I installed it, it seemed to work fine. Back to the drawing board I suppose.

I had the same problem about a year ago but I'm in the minority because I want my DRL's to work because they have saved me several times by allowing me to get home at night when my low beams failed-I had the burned plug terminal and bypassed it by the Geo Rating fix explained elsewhere on this forum-

I don't mind DRLs, but I coast with the engine off, and it turns them off when the engine is off. So, I'd rather just manually run the low beams.

I checked for the burned terminal and everything looks good. Actually, it looks a lot different on my 99 (unless I'm looking in the wrong spot). The connectors on mine are black.

could you install a battery disconnect switch? I think I've heard now they have a type that can be turned on and off by a remote-

Nah, I don't want to have to do that.

I reconnected the bypass last night. I drove to church and back, no issues. I drove to work today, no issues. I'm not sure what the problem was before that it kept the lights on. I'll just keep an eye on it.
