I recently bought a 1991 Geo metro LSI convertable. The car was sitting on the ground with no wheels in Minnesota for a couple of years. It has major rust in the area on both sides of the rocker panels. It also has rust on the main unibody support ends that attach to a the main cross support that runs parallel to the rocker panel. I will be welding new support members to all solid unibody structures on both sides and then will replace and attach a rigid main support on both sides thus reinforcing the original unibody. The front, middle, and rear of the unibody is solid. There is lots of structure to weld to. I have experience welding and have three different welders. My question is I lack autobody repair experience and don't know what my trim lines should be with cutting out the original rocker panels. Do I leave all of the original rocker panel in place and then install the new rocker panel over the exsisting one or do I cut away everything but a inch or so all the way around? Or do I cut the exsact rocker panel size out and but weld the new to the old? Please advise I would like to get this back on the road ASAP Or would you advise I stop everything and part out? Thanks, Scott ![]() ![]()

Welcome to your new forum, svehey! Take a look at 92 XFI project, Mullet's 1998 Metro, Restoring Rocker Panels?? and Woodmans 95 Metro "Rusty" because I have little experience with body and paint. I am sure you will get some experienced help over the next few weeks. |

where did you get that rocker replacement? my vert could use some as well. You need to at least cut away enough material from the rocker to replace the inner member. The convertibles have an extra vertical piece of steel running through the rockers between the inside and outside for extra support since these lack the unibody roof. |

look here, this thread over at teamswift is a great example of vert repair: http://teamswift.net/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=43375&start=75&hilit=plunge (you may have to join to see the pics, its a good metro/swift site as well) here's a shot from the thread showing the replaced inner member:

http://www.carcraft.com/howto/ccrp_0702_repair_quarter_panels/index.html Although that is for quarter panels, it's pretty much the same concept with any repair panel on any part of the car. (Unless it's a bolt on piece) Edited by savageoner, Oct 22 2010, 12:07 AM.
