My emergency brake needs adjusting. Before I jack the car up and take a look for adjusters is there anything I need to know, or does it sound like I should replace the brake shoes? dave (old guy) Henderson, NV |

The rear adjusters like to freeze up on these. I would pull a drum and check the ling and see if it's adjusted properly. |

Rear brake adjusters fail and go full slack quite often, the only fix is new parts. You'll be surprised at how much better your brake pedal feels after you replace them. |

Maybe someone could take a picture of a correctly adjusted rear brake. I noticed that there are two levers with teeth on them. I would like to know which way to adjust them and a picture would be most helpful. |

I use mine once a day. Somebody told me, regarding parking brakes and cables, "use it or lose it". Hmm... |

There is no adjustment for you to do. Those two surfaces with the "teeth" on them (more like the ridges on a file than actual teeth) are the self adjuster. Note the incorporation of the word self. After you reassemble the brake, first time you press the pedal, they should take up the slack. If they don't hold, then they need to be replaced. |

If you are VVEERRYY careful with a small file, you can clean the teeth on the ratchet mechanism. I will tell you later if you can do that more than once.

I noticed on automatics most people don't use the e-brake so those get rusted up frequently. With a manual I use them all the time. |

Okay, thanks to all. I will pull the rear wheels again and look them over. May put a set of shoes on and a new brake kit to go along with the shoes. Seem the price is right from Autoparts123, at $16.71 for the shoes and $15.32 for the brake kit. dave |
