ok,

first i have decided to go with a woodstove since a friend gave me one, now all i have to do is buy the pipe and install it. heres a picture

now for my winter project i need to rebuild the motor. i will have 3 tech rebuild the head, do you guys think you could walk me thru the rebuild of the bottom end, or should i just take it to a machine shop and have them tear it down and rebuild it? i am trying to save as much money as i can. i have the car in the garage and i have started to tear into it a little bit. my question is should i pull the motor with the trans or seperate? here is a picture of my setup

i would love to do the bottom end myself but it may be better to just buy a short block. here is a shot of the engine bay

so what do you all think pull with tranny or without?

Please just call me; "Schultz"

It is easier to pull the engine and transmission as a unit, then split them on the floor.
I will also build a new engine for my car this winter.
Haven't started yet though.
You go first, I'll get mine started soon.

No need to pull the engine if you are doing rings, pistons, bearings, etc

If you do pull it, pull both.

Yes, look in the Guides/How to section. Johnny Mullet has a tutorial with plenty of pictures.

I would leave the engine in the car. You can do everything you need to do with it in the car.

so if i leave the motor in the car when it comes time to hone the cylinders it wont hurt the crank?

Not if you be careful. I stuffed a clean rag as far down on top of the crank as I could and honed away. It can be done, just be careful.

enginedoctorgeo i have 185xxx on the engine. do you think the crank and crank bearings os ok? and after honing the cylinders with rags on crank how did you clean everything back up when finished.

After honing, I carefuly pulled the rags out the top and then took some more clean rags and cleaned the cylinders out with starting fluid. Be sure after you clean them to lubricate them well or they will start rusting immediately. I didnt do the crank bearings on mine. Just the rod bearings.

I bought mine from a local engine parts supplier. Replaced some cracked pistons, rod bearings, rings, valves and valve seals and the headgasket. Heres their website but I did not buy online. I dont know where you live but if you cannot find any local there are some good deals online with other suppliers.
