I really like the looks of the Hyundai Accent but I don't know a thing about Hyundai. It seems like a newer version of the Metro; cheap, compact, pretty good on gas. The reviews online are bad, but have any of you had any personal experience with them? Any professional mechanics out there in GMF ever wrench on them? Are they easy/hard to work on? Is the engine interference? Don't get me wrong, I will never get rid of my metro, ever, but I might like a little bit newer car someday. Thanks for any feedback! |

You scared me MetroRob. I was wondering if I had posted about my in-laws Accent that I was working on today and forgotten I had. It is a 2001, champagne and not a bad little car IMHO. I like it's looks also. But, yeah, nobody seems to like it. I've heard that before. The in-laws' Accent was trashed by the PO who said she had the transmission repaired . I had to install new struts and tune it. I think they paid $1200 3 yeas ago but I'm not sure. I have synthetic oil in it. The rear hatch is broken (I have to remove the inside panel to unlock it), the emergency flasher button malfunctions, it stopped shifting into 3rd (automatic) so I had to disassemble the shifter and repair a broken wire. There is some mystery sound in the RF but the bearings and CV test OK. No click and it's inconsistent. I had a valve lifter tick but Seafoam took care of that. I don't know but I assume it's interference It's the Alpha engine. wikipedia.org/Hyundai_Alpha_engine

Worst problem with the Accents are the automatic transmissions. 5 speeds are great. It's a cheap car so original owners tend to forgo PM's on them, kinda like PO of our Geos. They are valve banger engines. Ask for receipt for TBelt replacement if anywhere near 90-100k. Belt breaks around 100-110k. Another weak point is the power windows. Hand crank windows are fine, no issues. Hyundais [as well as some domestic guys like 03 Buick Lesabre ] are using a cheap cable window regulator assembly. Metal cable, plastic pulleys, not a good mix. Plastic wears & all the sudden your window doesn't go up or down. Usually stuck 1/2 way up on a rainy/cold day. Easy fix tho. Pic a part sells complete unit with motor for 20-25 bucks. Replaced one on an the above mentioned Buick awhile back. Noticed it looked just like the Hyundai part. Flipped it over & it was stamped Hyundai. Hyundai in the 90's was TOTAL junk. The 2000 up are much better. The ones made in the last couple of years are actually pretty good cars. If bought new, they have a 10 yr 100,000 mile power train warranty. The new Sonata is sweet. Better equipped than the Camry & gets better mpgs. [35 hwy] Looks great/much cheaper. Sonata is coming out with a Hybrid next year. If buying used find out proof of PM's. Watch, Hyundai is really going to be a thorn in Toyota's side over the next few years since the quality & value has come up so much. Elantra has gotten very good reviews lately. |

The Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent share a lot of the same parts. Even the newer Accents are junk. I'd rather go with a Toyota Yaris. I do like the new Hyundai Elantra -- and two years ago Consumer Reports rated it above the Corolla!

I've never experienced the accent, but my mom use to have a sonata and when it was a few years old it would randomly have a tough time starting. My uncle has a red accent 5 spd and drives that thing everywhere just for mpg so I have mixed reviews on it |

Hyundai now has that 4Dr. Genesis V8 that puts out CORVETTE Horsepower!! But I imagine you'll pay a Premium for it like $600.00 per month, will need Premium 93 Octane Gas and Insurance is Bad too. Essentially a Korean Audi, Mercedes Benz or BMW, basically. I remember the Excel was a Nemesis of mine when I had my '86 Chevy Sprint. They and the Ford Escort GTs (another POS) used to terrorize me all the time in my '86 Chevy Sprint. (Nowadays, it's all Silverado!) And they used to really push and promote the Hyundai Excel all the time. When was the last time anyone saw a fixed up cherried out Road Warrior '86 or '87 Excel? I guess it's all in that Genesis 4.6 4Dr. now, heh! heh! Look Out Geo Metro!! |

I too like the Accent's styling. it's the interior that is truly awful in them. I remember looking at them two years ago and the door panels felt like they were made of some sort of cheap, imitation Rubbermaid plastic storage bins that you'd find at Wal Mart. There are two of them where I work and they don't seem to be unreliable. One of them does take a long time to start though and it's a 2007. The other is I think a 2004 or 2005 and it needs a starter. For the same or similar money you can get a Yaris though and the Yaris is a much better made car with either the best or near the best reliability of any new car you can buy at any price. Plus it also comes standard with ABS, traction control and stability control-features that should give you a significant discount on insurance. Why buy mediocrity when you can buy the best for the same money? Yes the Yaris is ugly, but it's still the best value. |

Good point. Correct about the door panels on older ones. Don't know if newer are better now. 100k warranty is hard to beat if bought new tho. Have seen plenty of Toyotas with knocking/blown motors. No Yaris yet. Seen several Corollas 2000-2002 with rod knocks. |

I've removed some panels and they are as you describe Jim-Bob. The handle/latch for the hatch is cheap an not designed well and I need to find a replacement or some very strong plastic cement.

Before I purchased my 90 Metro hatchback I owned a Kia Rio and a Hyundai Elantra. The Rio was a 3/5 and Elantra was an automatic, and both cars drove really nice. I specifically bought the Rio because it was cheap, a 5 speed, and I drove alot of miles for work and school at the time. I had twin babies and with car seats in the back I had to push my drivers seat as far forward as possible, so there wasn't much legroom in the back. The Metro has alot more space in my opinion. At 62k miles the Elantra's timing belt broke, causing $3200 in uncovered warranty repairs. That entire fiasco is what drove me to never purchase a new car again and just drive used (hence the Geo) because in my opinion factory warranties are useless. That decision further drove my wife and I to become debt-free as a result of having no payments. Best decision we ever made. |

No, just trying to stay on topic. We can always stray off and discuss how many interior parts we have had to replace on the Geo or dash cancer or carpets, yada, yada, yada.

i hate accents, my friend had a 2000 5 speed. and it sucked. He replaced the motor and then his second motor had a tick. Had no brakes most of its life and was rigged to hold together at every point aha never touch one after seeing that |
