"Government handouts like Welfare and Food stamps are legal, BUT THEY ARE WRONG and I would never participate." we can sure agree on that. I REFUSE to ever participate in that system because then I become part of the problem.

"So you are confirming she is breaking the law, but arguing she is not "stealing". To me it's semantics, but I'll give you that. "

No I am not. I never said she was NOT breaking the law so I have nothing to confirm and no need to confirm.

I am saying it is NOT THEFT it is NOT STEALING.

semantics is not in the equation.

You must deprive of property to be theft. COPYING is not DEPRIVING. its just that simple. No ifs ands or butts about it.

If its just semantics to you how about I have the judge change your next parking ticket into a 50mph over speeding ticket.

hey next time you j walk we will just call it bank robbery and charge you with that instead ok?

its just semantics right.

damn. in illinois (maybe all of u.s), there is a thing called a link card. Pretty much if a single mother has a ton of kids they give her this card. Then you see that lady at walmart buying steak, big bags of doritos and all kinds of good food with it. hell they eat better than I do. Sometimes they get away with buyin beer and cigs. bs imo

Social Security is my money, I paid it in there. Unemployment is somewhere in between, pretty much an insurance scheme that my employer paid into, but heavily subsidized by the government.

It is semantics, clear and simple.

Copy some DVD movies and start selling them. You'll be arrested because you are depriving the owner of sales opportunities. It will be called copyright infringement but in fact is piracy, another word for a stick up or mugging.

SS is a pyramid scheme that you and your employer have been forced to participate in.

Nerys..

You seem to be getting really hot over what is merely a discussion. I'm not making any personal attacks or anything. I hear you, you think you can copy what you like. I personally disagree with you but it's not like I am on my way to your house to image your system and turn you in. (Even if I do have the hardware, software and knowledge to do so ;) )

Going from copyright infringement to stealing isn't as wide a leap, as jaywalking is to bank robbery.

I have see enough "jailhouse" lawyering in my time (13 years in corrections in another career) to know that there are a myriad ways to attack laws, statutes, and regulations you don't to follow. My point is that as long as the laws are on the books, you are in a decidely disadvantaged position; as this woman found out.

Is the law fair? Obviously people disagree, but until it's changed people like her who transgress it are setting themselves up for the consequences that come with it.

Whether the law is fair is a question for another discussion (personally I say not even close in fact I think the law is illegally being applied since damages of that sort were intended for malicious infringement SUCH AS those copying DVD's and SELLING THEM)

Going from copyright infringement to stealing is a LARGER LEAP than going from jaywalking to bank robbery.

They are not even in the same universe comparatively speaking.

I also have a core problem with the law since it requires no INTENT to be in violation.

Remember sharing music is LEGAL. its ONLY internet file sharing that is "illegal" (comparing to me recording radio and sharing it with you)

Goto the library find a cool book like someone on one page so you slap the book on a copy machine and hit copy to get a copy of that page.

Are you aware that you just did the EXACT same thing as this woman did?

Sing "happy birthday" to your kids. are you aware you just did the EXACT same thing as this woman did?

Sing a song to yourself in the shower. are you aware you just did the EXACT same thing as this womand did?

When I say exact same thing I mean broke the exact same LAW she broke.

Its called copyright out of control and its called why do these people always find the DUMBEST lawyers to defend them.

I am not anything close to a lawyer and EVEN I CAN POKE A BILLION HOLES in their arguments. Not the prosecutors but the stupid DEFENDERS arguments.

Its almost like these people are intentionally getting morons for their defense. or at least people really really clueless about the technology here.

the VERY IDEA that a regular person simply downloading some music from a file sharing site is ANYWHERE REMOTELY comparable to a pirate hacking copying and hocking DVD's is preposterous.

it is LITERALLY like calling jaywalking bank robbery.

do bank robbers even have to pay a penalty anywhere near as high as what was levied against this woman?
