Today marks the first official snowfall here in the mid-upper Lower Peninsula. 35 degrees ambient and light snow! Heck yeah! :D

For those of you who live in the northern U.S., what are your favorite winter activities? I snowboard, ski, and do luge runs.

And, of course, I will include "metro_fiend" who lives in Canada... ^o)

(And I should be traveling to Alaska to witness the Iditarod in February!) http://www.iditarod.com/

Happy for you!

What tires do you use on the Metro for snow/ice?

Supposed to be in the low-twenties tonight. We had a major snowstorm on December 19, 2008. I hope we get another one like that before 2011! I'm ready for it.

Just use the regular 13" manufacturer recommended. Speaking of that, I'm due for a rotation/balance next week. Good winter tires are non-existent for the Metro in Michigan. Just go with the all-season.

Saw on the news last night that the weather patterns over the Pacific so far this fall are mimicking the worst 2 winters on record (for snow/cold). Don't know what that means for Michigan (Siberian Express?).

But want to outfit Gary properly (rears were ok for summer--not winter though).

A friend said Metros did great in the snows of Utah.

You're right, Stately. Oddly, the Metro fares well in winter, and I'm surprised due to the light weight. My parents joked about putting some sandbags in my car just after that snowstorm in 2008.

The last two winters were pretty rough in Michigan. 2008-2009 was especially bad. 2009-2010 wasn't as cold, but produced record snowfalls, which helped our harbors and channels as Lake Michigan reached historic low water levels in the summer of 2007. Freighters and ships coming into port through channelways would run aground. It was something I never witnessed before.

As you know, we have "lake effect" snow, which hammers counties on Lake Michigan. My parents still live in Muskegon County and got hit hard. As the front goes over the warmer waters of Lake Michigan, it builds intensity.

From what I hear, this winter should be just as harsh as the last two.

I think my Metro is more agile in the snow than my mom's Camry.

My dad's Tundra is alright in it -- nothing spectacular.

Maybe I can equip the Metro with snowshoes!
