well its alot of work to do it right, i always pull motor and trans, and have had customers only want one side done, even though you can't tell till its to late.. i was chargin 150 per side, but the electric for the welder doubled, wire, gas, even grindin wheels, metal ect...prob 200 per side---- and as people can't see i have a few other things i do to make it stronger to, pat pendin....fix exaust, manifold bolts, repack lower ball jts,so they'll last longer, grease shifter bolts.,.,. bla bla ..do it once, do it right 1/8 plate- no flex, will out last rest of car.....

I know it will outlast the car, but is 1/8 overkill, or just what you had available?

and if you look close at the pic, you can see the color change at sides of each weld, it got red hot, good flow, super strong weld, not disking anyone here--- but most people don't do it right or strong, and thats why it fails, and the car gets sold or scrapped, when if done right, happy , safe ,metro lover......i found if use any thinner- was blowin holes, and meltin through, and looked like crap,,,,

Does that epoxy paint you applied help to keep it from rusting on the outside?

that OSPHO sounds like good stuff
based on the name , it must use Phosphoric acid to form a layer of Iron Phosphate on the surface of the metal
just apply that , and paint the flat black layer that forms ...
and you are finished as long as you do not scratch through the layer of iron phosphate , it will never rust.

and
Rustoleam part # 7830730 rust reformer
for paint brush on
also available as a spray paint

stops rust , it really works. the same way.
=====================================
the spray on tar stuff can seal in moisture and make the rust problem worse , not a good idea .
bought a can of the rustolium spray rust killer at walmart today :) I'll try it tonight.

yes,the por - 15 paint, can even seal oil pans, gas tank leaks, and stops rust,, but the metal has to be clean,,, and it don.t like sunlite,,,you gotta cover it - paint under coat.,.,.,.

Rust is oxidation. It occurs when certain metals contact water in the presence of oxygen. Different metals behave differently; some will rust clean through, while others will rust on the outside and then stop. So, to prevent rust parts must be kept either dry, away from oxygen, or both. The correct paint always stops oxidation.

However, not every part can be painted easily and this is where caring and creativity it important. Hollow beams and cavities should be plugged with foam inserts, and electronic sensors should be shielded. Some parts can be given their own custom boots and splash guards. Other parts should just be upgraded, you can get higher quality bolts made either from or with non-ferrous metals, these metals typically are more corrosion resistant e.g. stainless steel, chrome, etc.

Please do not spray the underside of your car with toxic, and expensive chemicals that could be better used as solvents or recycled. Just take the time to get it done right. Oil holds grime, and sometimes that means water. Furthermore, it degrades all other things petroleum based like belts, seals, gaskets, and tires. Oiling usually just damages one material to protect another.
