Hello everybody, I just got a new job and am going to need a second car. I want something sall to make parking in South Philly easier, and good on gas. I saw a 96 LSi hatchback with a manual tranny and 132,000 miles on it. The dealership is asking $1,495. I figured you guys would have better insight as to if this is a good deal and what I should look for when I go to check it out this weekend. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help. |

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong category, I thought it was the closest match... especially if I buy it and can post pics and show everybody what I do with it. |

Welcome to the forum! Check out the How to buy a Metro guide here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/3425238/1/ If fuel mileage is your goal then you want the 3 cyl with a 5 speed manual. The 4 cyl with a 5 speed manual won;t return as good of mileage but is still ahead of either engine with an automatic. $1495 seem a bit high for my area but don't know what the price typically is in yours. I'd suggest checking Craigslist for reference. Good Luck! |

Welcome to your new forum, EvilBean42! We have PSA: Metros on Craigslist that you can check frequently. It is perfectly fine to start Topics in various categories. I think this might get more attention in the "lounge" and will move it if you wish. All you need to do is ask and a moderator will combine topics, delete extra posts, and edit stuff. You might want to look at our FAQ page. The question on the 96 LSi will still be rust and for $1500 get a compression check. Should be warm and Wide Open Throttle but their numbers need to be at least 150 psi (170 for $1500) or you will be looking at a rebuild that you can do for $600 +/- ...and of course do the usual test drive and checks. |

4cyl 5 speed is a good combo, but before buying, check for rust issues as shown in the buyer's guide. This is the deal-breaker on these cars. |

Ok, I got down there today to take a look at the car... First off, I'm amazed at how well the engine ran on it. I guess you are all used to seeing one of these little 4cyl engines run like new on a car with 132K miles but I was definitely expecting it to be a little choppy. That said, The frame rot didn't seem to be a big deal, there was minimal rust on the car. I did however find that the driver side mount for the rear sway bar had completely rotted out and was no longer holding the sway bar to the body. The sway bar itself was rusted between the two mounts, but in solid enough shape, and the passenger side sway bar mount was not rotted at all. Is this a deal breaker? Also, when i noticed this I told the dealer I wanted to do more research, but would gamble and buy it then for $1,000 without doing any more homework. He told me the lowest he could go was $1,100. So the price is now $1,100 firm, as opposed to the asking $1,500. What do you think? Again, any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help so far, this is a great forum. |

As far as the rear swaybar goes, just remove it! I have no rear swawbar on my 97 or my 98 and never noticed any handling difference. A PA Inspection would be fine as long as the mechanic is clueless. Just be sure to patch any holes. |

$1100 seems like a good deal to me. That is actually a little low for what you get here at the Beach. Go now and make your purchase. Come back with pics. |
