So it begins! My first thread is here with more details.

Right after I got it:

Badly faded dash, and yes, the floormats came with the car:

Lotsa dents, but no rust on this car. Has lived its whole life here in Wa state, so its not an east coast rust bucket:

Yeah... this Metro has a push button start! Looks like one of the previous owners had an alarm in there at one point and took it out, and the owner after them just wired this in bypassing the ignition switch. I'll need to trace those wires and reconnect them eventually. Then I can get rid of this hack:

From what I can tell, having a tach on a 1.0l 5sp Metro is rare, maybe not though. Cant see it well in this pic, but that does tay 213k miles:

Drivers door sags bad. Will need to replace the hinge pin bushings:

Seem to be missing a lot of brackets that hold the EGR components. Will need to make a trip to the junkyard to see if I can find some replacements:

Few more photos here.

First thing I did when I got it was to replace the exhaust, since I need to get an emissions test before I can transfer registration. Got new cat back exhaust components from partsgeek with some online coupons spent right around $100 for everything, new hangers, resonator section, muffler, clamp, gasket etc:

Action shot :D :

Drove it for a few days with the replacement exhaust, then got the code 51, decided to start looking at the EGR system and try and fix the high idle.

This is about where I stopped since I couldn't get the engine idling around 850 smoothly. Did a compression test and found what I posted here:

Next I guess I start the teardown!

Finally started taking it apart and got the head off and the valves out.

Anyone know what these ports are protruding into the intake valve tract? The #1 and #3 are clogged, and you can actually see the buildup on the tip of the one in #3:

#2:

Can see the #2 is open:

Valves, first is #1, looks burnt, #2 looks ok, #3 not as burnt as #1:

Stopped for tonight, still need to get the valve seals out, maybe the guides too...

Those tubes are supposed to add a swirl motion to the intake, but are not really needed.

So where does the other end go? I see the go into the intake manifold and there is a ton of black crud in those passageways too. Is it part of the EGR system? I didn't look at the passageways all that closely as it was getting late, but it didn't look like it went to the EGR passageways in the manifold but I could be wrong.
