Your old catalytic converter is worth money!! I guess it is where you live but old cats go from 15 to around 30 dollars in this area. Before the market dropped a couple of years ago some could bring 60 to 70 dollars, Not sure what a Mertos bring but it might fool you. Some original Japanese converters bring pretty good money. Something you can always be on the look out for. A cordless sazall makes quick work removing one. :banana :banana :banana

Junkyards around here remove them from all the cars. Don't know if it's a state or federal thing regarding selling used ones.

Local theives like to visit the used car lots at night time for a five finger discount of cats. Battery powered sawsall does the trick for them. Bad way to make a living.

Correct I dont think you can legally buy a used one but you can sell them at the larger recycling yards. Junk yards collect them and then negotiate a lot price for them. I live very close to one of the larger recycling places. They really shred some nice cars.

I can buy used ones at my local good ole boy JY. I know you're not supposed to buy used ones but I never knew why. Does the govt. just want to screw us more?

because they had to DESTROY the market for scrapping cats since people were crawling under cars along residential streets and in parking lots CUTTING the cats out of cars because the platinum made them worth so much money for scrap.

the only way to stop this behavior is to make them "worthless" so you have no reason to vandalize peoples cars for them.

You can still sell them. You just can not legally buy used cats. Big sign on the wall at the shredder place stating the prices. I have not sold many this year but last year I did. The only reason I posted this was to let people know that their old cat might be worth a few bucks. Hope I did not start a national crime wave. :evillol :evillol :evillol Scrapyards are getting a lot tighter about what they buy. Used to you did not need a title in Florida to scrap a car. Now you do. Picture Id, thumb print, photo taken with you and the check. I junked cars off and on for a couple of years. Made pretty good money and it was fun.

On your '91, the computer or engine has no way of knowing if there's a cat or not. ODB2 ('96+) cars have a rear O2 sensor that only monitors catalyst efficiency (no fuel trim), but even then you can just tie the O2 sensor up out of the way and it won't throw a code or effect the engine operation.

You can remove your cat without causing issues, but it's really not necessary unless it's plugged. You won't gain any HP or get better mpg without it. If you live in an area with emission testing, obviously you can't remove it.

There's a federal law prohibiting it.

I know Rooy but was wondering why it was a law. Why would the govt. want you to buy a new one instead of buying a perfectly good used one. Just curious!

My guess would be that since there's no way of knowing what condition the used one is in, the only sure way of knowing that a replacement cat will be effective is to buy a new one.

Guess I was wrong about buying them Check out this on Ebay. Just depends on how you word it. Posted Image Interesting. Rooy has a very good point about why you cant buy one to use. :banana :banana :banana This converter is sold for the sole purpose of recycling and recovery of it's precious metal content. It will be trimmed as much as possible to prevent it's illegal use for any other purpose.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has informed us that it is a violation of government regulation to install a used converter from a salvage yard or sell it for reuse unless it has been properly tested and labeled. Similarly it is a violation to install an untested used converter, even if the customer insists that the used converter came off his/her vehicle. Check out this link More than you need to know LOLhttp://www.epa.gov/oms/cert/factshts/catcvrts.pdf
