Nice work Jib-Bob! Another great Permatex product is their Rust Treatment.

http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/specialized_maintenance_repair/body_interior_trim/auto_Permatex_Rust_Treatment.htm

It seems to attack the embedded rust, that can't be washed or ground off. Goes on clear then turns black when it's done the job. Makes for a very nice paintable surface too. I've used it for brake drums, steering knuckles, body panels, and soaking the inside of the frame rails.

You're making great progress! :popcorn

I have used products similar to that in the past and while they do tend to slow down the rust they never completely stop it. It always seems to rust right back through it. It's why I try to completely eliminate the rust inside and out then paint and treat the car inside and out. Nothing else has ever worked for me. Then again, my car is different from yours in that it has probably never seen winter or road salt, so the problem is nowhere near as pervasive. I have a chance to completely eliminate it economically while a car that has rusted out badly usually cannot have it's rust eradicated without an expensive chemical dip and new panels-something that is economically impractical on a car as cheap as a Metro.

I find the "world's crappiest multi-tool" ie Dremel tool with a wire brush attached, great for cleaning ground wire connections, spark plugs, distributor cap posts and the dist. rotor. :-/

Oh no.... trust me.... I have had a real Dremel. I liked the Dremel. This thing is no Dremel! It has no power whatsoever and will stop with even the faintest sign of resistance. Not shown in these pics is that the chuck needed to be shimmed with a piece of wire taken from a wire brush so it wouldn't spit the bit out. For more heavy duty stuff I usually use an air powered die grinder. However, my air compressor is at my parent's rental house where I was using it to popcorn a ceiling and texture some drywall and I am just too lazy to go and get it. That's sad too as the rental is in my subdivision and I drive a pickup...

Well.... my Geo metro family has grown by one! I found a competition blue 1991 3/5 4 door today for $300 on Craigslist. I offered $250 and it was accepted! It runs and drives but needs tie rod ends, a battery and a few other odds and ends. The body is rust free but it has been hit in the rear at some point and now the hatch seems to be leaking water a bit. Still, $250 for a running, driving Metro is a good deal. Of course, there are pictures of the car in it's native habitat, but i am at Mc Donald's right now so they will have to wait until I get home to my fast upload speeds.

And here are the pics! This car will be put on the road immediately to start saving me money. I have to go pick it up tomorrow after a trip to the DMV to get the title processed and get the tags. I didn't bother to do a compression check on it as I figured that the 5 speed parts alone were worth the price of admission if the engine is bad. If it is good though it will go in the white car with the automatic and I will sell that one off. The new engine will go in this one and it will be my daily driver. if the engine is bad, I will just combine parts and make the white one the car I keep. The blue one will then be scrapped after stripping it of all useful parts and selling them on to whoever needs them.

So far, I know that it needs some front end work, a front crank seal ( included with the car) a belt for the A/C that supposedly works ( he says he pulled the belt because it made the car too slow... whatever...), a battery, and at least 2 tires. I will probably take the rack off the white car and put it on this one for now in order to fix the front end issue. I'll know more tomorrow when I get the car home.

Well.... if I strip it I will sell you the shell for a reasonable price if you come and get it. It's probably in better shape than most even with the wavy passenger's side quarter panel. I checked it for rot and found none-including the front suspension mounts. Besides, with all the crappy ones that get resurrected on here I would rather see a clean one like this have a chance at another life. It would be an awesome shell to use for someone who wanted to rebody their rotted out one.

For anyone wanting an update to this thread, the car is on hiatus for a few months. I now have the blue car going and don't have the resources to finish two of them. This one is going to be stabilized with the window fixed, the seam sealed and painted and then the car will be put on the side of my house for a few months. It will probably donate some of it's parts to the blue car for now as I really don't have the money to buy a lot of parts right now. I have to try and sell off my 1985 Cutlass Supreme and 1979 AMC Spirit first so that I can handle my financial situation.

I have an update! 3 Tech finished the head and I finally paid for it so it looks like I will get started on assembling the engine for this one soon. I haven't decided it's fate yet though as I can't deliver pizza in it due to the insurance issues mentioned elsewhere but I want to keep it. If I decide to sell it it will have an automatic and a new engine and other parts. If I keep it, it will have a manual and a bunch of other mods to try and max out the highway fuel economy. If that happens, I will just put cheaper insurance on it as a normal car not used for delivery. Then again, a good deal on a Prius (with me being able to afford it) would also change the dynamics entirely.
