This may sound like a silly question, but does a Metro use one key for everything like most Japanese cars, or two like a typical GM car of this era? The reason I ask is that the key I have fits the ignition but not the doors or hatch. It fits in the slot, but does not turn the lock. Am I missing a key? |

yep one key, but these keys are known for breaking off in the ignition, so you may have a car with a replaced ignition, but they didn't get it keyed the same as the other locks.

I bought my 98 from the original owner. He said the locks were never changed. My key will only work the ignition and passenger door. The key wont turn in the drivers door and hatch. I've lubed and wiggled but no turn! |

I've had Metros with both situations. They came with a one key set up. A good locksmith can re-key the locks for you so one key fits all. My locksmith did my last one for $20. YMMV |

I had lock issues as well when I got the convertible it came with a key and a "key stub" it turned out that my troubles were broken off key parts in the ignition, passenger door and trunk locks. I managed to clear the door and trunk locks myself but wound up pulling the ignition and taking it in to the locksmith and just like metroshultz I then had a car that worked on just one key. |

I got 4 copies of my key for $8 at walmart. Some of them can copy it, but a lot of them dont have the right size key. My orig. key wont work in the trunk or passenger side. |

@Bryan, does the key go all the way into the trunk and/or passenger side lock? If not then you probably have a broken off key part in the lock cylinder. early metro keys are pretty fragile and the tip tends to break off when people twist on them. |

got the hatch to work just now by bending the key a bit straighter. Passenger side has a broken key in it. I might mess with it this week |

Easiest way is to pull the lock cylinder from the door so you can have it in hand while you are working on it. There is a spring clip that slides in a slot on the inside of the door that holds the key cylinder to the door skin. Remove that spring clip, undo the plastic clip holding the control rod to the lock cylinder, remove the cylinder from the door and then you can focus on getting the broken key part out. Good luck! Lube the locks they will work better. Read someplace that the passenger door lock has a number stamped on it someplace. With this number you can go to a GM dealer and get a new key cut. Has anyone heard of this. |

I have had new keys cut from dealer codes but until recently wasn't aware that the code was also on the passenger door lock cylinder (certainly cheaper than paying for the dealer to look up the code). The GM dealr doesn't actually cut the new key (at least not the ones I have been to) they simply look up the code and take your money (not necessarily in that order) then you take the code to the locksmith where you buy the appropriate key blank (assuming they have them in stock) and pay to have the key cut. Lubing the locks helps a lot, I got a can of Lock-shot from my last visit to the locksmith and it has made a world of difference. |

Remember that your driver's side door lock, ignition lock, and key are well worn by this point. Getting copies made from your worn out key is not a very good idea. Get a fresh key made by a locksmith from the code on the passenger's side door lock. Get copies made from that and lube up your locks. If that doesn't work then ask your locksmith how much to re-key them to match. |
