Whats in the middle of the dash on a 94

So I pulled 2 really good speakers out of my dads 02 merc. villager. What I loved about the car is all the speakers have these great boxes built into the car that make them sound really good. Well when I removed the front speakers from the doors I found that they have a nice bracket that would let me put them right on the dash if I could drill into it a bit to let about 3 inches of speaker stick though. If not I might try to build up instead...but anyway. I want to cut a hole for a 2 speakers in the middle of my dash on that flat spot. The only thing I think I might have a chance of hitting is the air vent hoses. If thats the case I might be able to run them around the speakers with some vacuum hoses.

Thanks!

You have no room under the dash to mount speakers. Duck work ,heater and defrost housings are in the way.

dang. I'll have to make a box that fits over it then.

If I dont bother making a box what will it do to the sound of the speakers? Will it just reduce the bass?

well thats all depending if the speakers are free air resonance, but mostly with mids you wont notice any loss, even 6x9s.

what i like to do is get a subwoofer, and let that pickup the low end then set my mids and highs for no less than 100 HZ.

I put four 5 1/2 inch sony explodes in all four stock locations + 2 12" subs in the back and can't see how anyone would ever need more. Best system I have ever heard.

But I have a sedan....

Savage...I see you have a '95. Are the stock speakers 4" like a '92? I'm trying to find some decent replacement speakers to use without cutting up the interior. I've already got the dual 12's for the back end:

'Scuse me, Bryan...don't want to hijack your thread . Just looking for some speaker input from someone that's been there.

uhhh its not that tight under the dash folks. I think there is 3 inches of space available their I mean the dash itself has to be an inch thick so you only need 2 more inches

Your best bet would be to mod the doors to fit 5 1/4's or 6 1/2's and run them off an amp with a properly set crossover and perhaps a sub in the back. I have 520 watts to Pioneer 5 1/4's in my front doors and a 12" sub with 2000 watts.

Its way more than anyone "needs" but it sounds great and is defiantly louder then all the ricer Honda's driving around my area so that's good enough for me :D

I have a sub in the back and two 6x9s in the rear too. Might just hook em up w/o a box and see how they sound.

Based on nerys' pic you could try carefully drilling a 1" hole in the center of where you want to locate the speakers and just peek in to see if there is anything below the hole. :-/

Feel/look around under the plastic and then drill a bigger hole if you feel safe. If not find a chrome 1" plug and add some bling. :D Don't let the glade cut deeper than 1/4"beyond the dash. Could use a hole saw and do it by hand.

or just goto a junkyard and start drilling :-) just don't get caught or you just bought that dash in some places (though no one is likely to ever goto the trouble of going to get a dash for a geo anyway :-)
