Engine is getting tired - been noticing it a lot this past week. This past week bugged out for a few hours from work to meet my daughter at a field trip - 70 mile round trip in hilly terrain to get there. Car was a bit of a dog. Today had to make a run for work - different location but hills again. Used to be able to do 63-68MPH up Conejo grade in 4th, more like 53MPH today. What to do, what to do. |

Too much work and money and I'll likely replace the bean in a year and a few months when it comes time to smog it again. 'Might' put in new rings and get the head done while the engine is still in the car - that's about it. |

Time for a rebuild. Mine needs one soon also. I plan on doing a lot of head work to make it more effecient. More compression and "Singh grooves" are two things I can't wait to try! Dan-O |

I had an '89 Suzuki Swift GT with Automatic and No A/C. Powered up that Gawdawful Conejo Grade US 101 at 80 MPH in 3rd Gear. That was Awsome. My '04 Toyota Celica GT-S 6 Speed did the Same thing. My 5 Speed '86 Sprint, I had to wind it out in 3rd gear to make 50 MPH and my current '90 Geo Metro has to also be wound out at 50 or so MPH (if I'm lucky) in SECOND GEAR!! Think about this: If you ditch the 1.0 Litre 3 Cylinder in favor of the Twin Cam 16 Valve 1.3 Litre 4 Cylinder, you'll need to put Premium Gas in it (10.0:1 Compression Ratio, remember?) and spend more money on Gas to have the luxury of going 80 MPH in the Hammer Lane up the Conejo Grade. Me Personally, I'd much rather have T3Ragtop's setup: Turbocharged 1.0 Litre 3 Cylinder. Horsepower and Fuel Economy at the same time. It's a Shame that the Heil Hitler Communist State of California Outlaws Turbo Geo Metros. |

On the way home from work today I was bombing along at 75-80MPH. Yeah, it was flat on those stretches, but it was still fun and do-able. Shelving the rebuild until I really really really need to get it done. By then I hope the new Ford Fiesta with the turbo direct injected 0.9L is out. |

"new Ford Fiesta with the turbo direct injected 0.9L is out." Is Ford actually going to sell a REAL high-mileage car in the USA? Someone pinch me. Or maybe I am awake and this is a sign of the end. It would be so much more in-character for Ford to introduce a new SUV with a separate V8 for each wheel. |

Almost a year ago when I thought my Metro would not pass smog, I read that indeed Ford is coming out with 2 direct injected Fiestas in I think 2013. A turbo 0.9L , and a 1.3L (or was it 1.2L?). The current Fiesta with the 6spd automatic and 1.6L engine is claimed to get 40MPG fwy. Would love this Fiesta too, but I think the MPG is much worse. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TshFWSsrn8 |

They have done it before with the Mazda powered festiva and aspire, as well as the diesel powered escort. All of the above models got comparable mileage to the metro, so it is not beyond belief that they will do it again. |

By the way, JellyBean, I am Jealous of your 379.000 miles plus. My '90 "only" has 278.000 miles plus. Were you an LA Messenger/Courier like I was? How did you get yours that high. I always regarded anyone with 300.000+ miles to have Bragging Rights. Don't mean to be off topic but just curious. I'm struggling to get to the 300.000 mark but it's still too far away,LOL. |

I bought it used in 98' with 108K on the odometer. I've got a 100 mile/day commute that racks up the miles. Real easy commute - all freeway and along the coast for a lot of it. |
