Advice needed: What would you pay for this Metro?

I found a metro for sale which I like, but he's asking $3800 for it.
It's kind of rare: a '97 LSi with 5-spd manual transmission and it's a southern car (no rust)

Here is the craigslist ad:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/2055166323.html

It has 150K miles on the chassis. The interior is pretty good, but shows the usual
dashboard wear and driver-side seat wear (but no rips).
It sounds worth it to me, but what do you guys think?

On a separate but related topic, is the 1.3L as good an engine and as easy to work on as the 1.0L?

thanks,
-Tim

If the paint is really nice and the car looks great, then I say it's worth it as long as it's rust-free and runs like a rebuilt. The 5-speed with a 1.3L is a really good combo. Just be sure to maintain that engine so nothing wears out the head.

Driven correctly, 40+ MPG is very doable with that combo.

$3800 ?
the current owner should keep the car if it is such a gem and so desirable ,
but since he is selling it , we can see that he is not believing his own BS
imho he bought it so he could spend $350. on a $500 purchase and turn it around for $3800.00

$3k profit , not bad .
Frak that .
=============================================
you live in the rust free area already , every single car in your area is already rust free
no
just say no

watch what is in craigslist in your area and in other areas
use search tempast to search "geo metro" within 250 miles of your location for a month or more

BEFORE
you buy , so that you are aware of price compared to condition and miles in your area .
=======================================
i would offer 50% of the asking price IF and only IF
there was some reason i had to have that particular car ---- other wise ... see above
========================================
anyway
that is what i would do ... WHEN i feel the need to get another

Yep. Sounds like a $6 a gallon price to me.

Why you Mutt!

For comparison...I purchased my '91 for $200 (he was asking $350, but it wouldn't start right up, I offered him less and he took it). California car, rust free. Needed both half-shafts, right front wheel bearing, a hood, front bumper and some paint. Probably about $200 all told for things necessary to make it drivable and presentable. Needed a valve job about six months later...about $350 all together. (Now, I'd probably look into a 3tech head rather than have my old one done...not much more and they look like they'd be so much nicer!)

Moral of the story: unless you are really married to owning that particular car, you'd do well to keep looking.

Kelly Blue Book retail (what a dealer might ask) on that car, in excellent condition, in your area (I don't know your town, so I used the zip code for Farmington, NM) is $2435. Private party suggested price is $1685. Those are the top prices for a car with 150k miles.

I agree. The guy is on crack if he thinks he is gonna get 3800 for that 'gem'

Keep in mind that you are talking about a 14 year old car.

Metro's are a dime a dozen. This one is WAAAAAAAYYYYY over priced, unless it has about 2000 dollars cash in the glove box that comes with it.

I wouldn't pay anything over 2200.

I don't know guys, around here, every 96+ Metro I've seen advertised is always
right around $2000 unless it is an auto or a an absolute POS (with body damage,
etc.). With the rarity of a 5-spd LSi hatchback and all the new parts (engine internals,
lifters/valves, timing belt, clutch, bearings, tires, windshield), that's what made me
think his price is not all that outlandish. Put it this way, I don't think I could
buy a nice '97 and fix it up to that level for much less. Am I wrong?

Grr

now if its SHOW ROOM (and I really mean show room) and low miles. OK might be worth $3800 but anything short of show room cherry just is not worth that much in my book.

$3800 should buy you two Metros-LSi or not! Sorry, but that is just too much money. Hell, you could buy an otherwise nice one with a blown engine for under $500 and rebuild the engine, trans, and every mechanical part in the damn thing and still not hit $3800. Plus, with Metros, the ones to have are the three cylinder/ 5 speed models, not the fours. The car is a bit of a penalty box, so you might as well enjoy the full fuel cost savings potential when buying one. That is the main reason to own one, after all. Keep looking.

This is an opinion.

Fact is, 4 cylinders get 40+ mpg and can be driven like a regular car; the 3 cylinders get 50+ mpg and are driven like a Geo.
